ModeratorEasy question, difficult answer.
In PA, you get what you pay for. So cutting corners on price is not a good idea. My advice usually is to rent til you can buy pro quality. Include the gear rental (not just your PA but all your other stuff too!) in the gig price. Strike a deal with a rental company so you get some discount because you are essentially “reselling” their service. I get between 15-25% on my rental stuff from the companies I work with. Tell them you will be back several times a year and they will be happy to do business with you.
PA size and sub yes/no depends a lot on party and venue size. There are some very nice small satellite with single subs sets available (check the blog for the LD systems and HK Audio versions). Compact, easy to transport and pretty punchy and loud for smaller sized parties.
I have a Mackie HD setup with two 12″ HD1221s and a HD1801 sub. One sub is plenty for my purpose and although I CAN play with just the 12″s, the umph the sub gives makes for a better experience and does better justice to dance music. My tip: don’t overdo it with the lows. My sub is generally 3-6 dB lower to balance things out nicely.
Again, renting is a good option. It also gives you the option of renting a few different setups/brands/models to determine what you like best before committing a decent chunk of money to your PA purchase.
Hope that helps some.

BlockedI don’t want to spend loads as if I don’t like it i can go back to clubs. But the hours are better and it’s slightly better pay. With 2 children this is ideal really.
So maybe it might be better renting some for.the first couple of weddings I do and see how I go.
Thamks for your advice

ParticipantI use these:
http://www.rcf.it/products/pro-speaker-systems/art-series/art-312-a-mk-iiiDecent for up to 150 pax parties, but lack some bass, so depending on the style of music you play, you might want an additional subwoofer.
Yepp, not cheap.

ModeratorYep, used those too. Nice speaker.
Ended up with the Mackies because higher power (600W RMS instead of 400), higher SPL (133dB), wooden cabinet and finally I thought they sounded just that little better. But that’s just my taste/ears.
Also a tad more expensive though 🙂 (500 vs 800 euro a piece). It proves the point that you are looking at 800+ a pair for decent speakers.

KeymasterI second the Mackies, but I also agree you should rent for your first few weddings until you get the hang of it and decide it is your thing. Weddings are very different than anything else and you have to want to please the wedding couple foremost, everything else is secondary, even if you have to play music that you hate.

ModeratorOr NOT play music you really love for that matter 😀

BlockedThanks for the help. I have read the replies but forgot my password to login.
I have seen a pair of mackie thumps ta-15 for £300 which I hope I could get for £270/280
Whould these be any good as a starter pa set up if I add a sub? For weddings for 100/150 people.
I have read mixed reviews on these.
Thanks

ModeratorThe Thumps (especially the new series), as the name suggest, pack a decent bass punch. Especially for a wedding where large amounts of sub-low are called for I think you’ll get away with a set of Thumps. Soundwise it’s a bit of a love/hate thing. You either love them or you hate them (particularly the first series). So, as usual, trust YOUR ears!

BlockedOk great thanks. I’ll go and try them out tomorrow and see how I get on. Fingers crossed. A stupid question but if you want to use 4 powered speakers. you run them out of mixer into two speakers. Then use the thru or link to the others? Also will this reduce any loudness from the speakers?
October 6, 2014 at 8:36 pm #2068521DJ Vintage
ModeratorActive speakers you can easily daisy-chain through thru/link connections. Should be no loudness reduction.
My personal favorite is pointing them all inward creating a sort of “dancefloor” where you focus the music.

BlockedOk brilliant that’s what I was thinking if I got 4 then point them inside.
I’ll take a gamble on these speakers and hopefully they will be just what I need.

ModeratorIf you have a chance to listen to them, do so. Be sure to use some music (various genres if possible) you know intimately and then decide if it sounds like you think it ought to. Don’t be rushed (no 15 second bits of tracks), it’s money, your money and it takes your ears a bit of time to “acclimatise” to a different kind of speaker (assuming you will have listened to music on the way there on your car stereo or headphones for example).

ParticipantHi, Can somebody tell me about the pros and cons of the Mackie SRM 650. Right now there’s a discount of $100 on its price $599.99(US) until november 30. I think is a good offer I mav take advantage of. but I would like to have more input on these speakers. Also for how many people a pair of these (no subwoofer) may be suitable.
October 6, 2014 at 9:35 pm #2068621DJ Vintage
ModeratorI have not used the new 650s. But I do have a set of 450s. Good speakers. With 800W RMS a piece (I think?) a pair will bring you 1600W. Depending on what formula you use (5W indoor unless you want it really loud, in which case 10W per person) you can easily do between 150-250 people. In the latter case it might make sense to start thinking about a sub if you need it a) loud and b) with lots of bass.
Just my two cents of course.

BlockedWell the club I play in has martin audio speakers which sound lovely. And at home I use pioneer sdj80x which are good monitors for everyday listening.
So i will take a few tracks and listen and see what they are like.
Thanks again
