ParticipantOut of curiosity, is there something wrong with the official mapping from Gemini?

ParticipantI know how to map in Traktor. What’s the problem? Doesn’t the provided mapping from Gemini work?

ModeratorMore importantly, do you actually NEED to use Traktor. Is it the best software for you?

ParticipantWhy are you always asking that about Traktor, but never about Serato or Cross, Vintage?

ModeratorIn my opinion I do ask that, but I’ll admit that my experience with both Traktor and Cross has led me to a point where I feel Traktor is the most complicated of the two, both in settings and in mapping. I know you CAN map anything to Traktor as long as it is midi, not a Traktor feature as you can do this in other software as well, but I have to say that mapping in Traktor is a lot nastier to do (and I did it myself) than it is, for example, in Cross.
Another point is that Traktor is – imho – a narrower platform when it comes to DJ-ing. It has some exclusive features that will work wonders for a specific genre of DJs. It also lacks some features, which make it unsuitable for another large group of DJs.
My point with the remark I made earlier was not to move him away from Traktor, but to make sure that he is putting effort into making something work to his liking with the software that is best for him. As his question was about Traktor, that is what ended up in my question.
In his OP he mentions that he tried many different software platforms but that his controller is just not working to his liking with Traktor. Others already asked what is wrong with the native mapping for Traktor. So, perhaps I should rephrase my question to read:
“A more important question to ask, before investing a lot of time in a potentially difficult or lenghty mapping process, is am I sure that the software I am doing this for is the right one for me”.
As far as I am concerned, the choice of software is (and I have written this in many replies) a) highly personal and b) perhaps one of the most important ones to ask before even going out and looking at hardware.
And if Traktor is your flavor, then by all means, use Traktor. Many people using Serato now (since it is so much widely supported). But just because it comes with your controller, doesn’t mean it’s the right platform for you.September 12, 2014 at 1:20 pm #2056301Marco Solo
ParticipantI understand and thanks for the elaboration, but let me react to one point you made. You said it’s more complicated and “nastier” in your experience.
I’ve made mappings in both Traktor and Cross and I agree that the basics are harder to learn in Traktor. But in my experience, once you have those basics it kind of switches in favor of Traktor.
It is much easier to map fancy stuff in Traktor. In some cases, I find Cross not making much sense and I have to use a lot of trial and error to find the right settings for certain commands. Sample slot behaviour for my F1 was a pain to map in Cross. Some commands aren’t even possible in Cross AFAIK but kind of easy (it’s all relative) to do in Traktor.
I agree with your last point. I’m in a position where I don’t even care what software a controller is made for, because I can force it to do what I want through mappings. But hey, I’m a total nerd when it comes to mapping, so my experience is unlikely to be simmilar to yours. And once again, feel free to disagree with anything I said.
I have a hunch that the problem of OP is easy to fix. There are multiple ways of importing a mapping file and if you don’t understand what the in and out ports do you can set those wrong very easily. These things combined are very common and take less than a minute to fix.

ParticipantI wholeheartedly agree with what you say about Traktor’s mapping once you understand it – it is super powerful. I have done some pretty sweet tricks to tweak the way my cheap controller operates to give it more functionality than what it ships with, phsyically – like making shift+volume act as the pitch slider since the Instinct only has a rocker switch for pitch adjustment.

ModeratorTraktor is indeed very powerful software. But guys, if you are not very tech savvy (and many of our readers aren’t), you’ve got to admit that it is not the easiest and user-friendly software in the world (if you wan’t to change something).
If it was all that self-explanatory, I don’t think the Traktor Bible (I have one LOL) would have been such a hit.
It’s a bit like computers, many people like Macs, because they just want to toss programs on there, set a few personal preferences and be done with it. People that love tweaking their computers to the last comma will prefer Linux or even Windows systems.

ParticipantYeah, that was why I said “once you understand it.”
I’m a pretty serious geek, so tech to me is very easy to work with. Probably why Traktor fits my personal workflow best.

ParticipantAm I the only one that likes VDJScript?
September 15, 2014 at 9:04 pm #2057911deathy
ParticipantHonestly, VDJ was a bad enough fit for my workflow that, while VDJScript was indeed cool, it was not enough to make me stick with it.
That said, when mapping controllers in VDJ, it felt like there was this extra level of disconnect that I really didn’t care for. Maybe it’s something I would’ve sorted out eventually, but I can do much more powerful mappings in Traktor than I was able to in VDJ, after spending about the same amount of time learning how mapping worked.

ParticipantJust trying to get back on topic.
Back to the original OP what is the problem exactly that you are having with Mapping the GV2.
Usually it is just going into the preferences, controller section and importing the TSI file provided.
Then it should work.I have done several mapping of my own including a full controller which had no mappings at all.
So let us know what we can do to help. -
