    Without knowing all the details, I’m commenting based only what you’re telling us…but that sounds weird to say the least.

    Juridically speaking, I think it would be in your rights to disclose which contest was in question. The people organizing the contest should definitely be called out for such behavior. Not only is that a totally dick move on their part, it’s very likely it’s also a breach of contract (or contest rules, more like).

    Have you tried contacting the organizers and ask for an explanation?

    Most contests are a scam.
    They are not actually there for the sake of the winner getting anything but for the ones doing the contest to get cash or some other benefit (exposure for viral marketing).
    Same with all the casting shows on TV. They are there to make you watch them, for the prominent jury to get loads of cash and for the sponsors to get exposure for premium ads. They could not care less if the winner actually makes something of it and apart from a view most of them are never seen or heard from again after the first album (that makes nearly no cash for them, but for the label sponsoring it).

    So get over it and move on.

    Terry has a point there. Obviously the main point of these contests is promoting a brand, event or what not. However, what makes this particular case interesting is that apparently the 2nd runner up got his gig.

    So the question is…assuming that the whole contest wasn’t a hoax, why didn’t Sean get his winner gig while the 2nd runner-up did? As I said before, I’d be very interested to know what contest was it?

    Because the 2nd runner up would have gotten the gig anyways?
    Because the 2nd was a friend of someone?
    Because the 2nd did pay some promoter some money?
    Because the 2nd did cut someone in on the gig money?

    and yeah I have contacted the people asking what is going on and for an explanation and they haven’t returned my emails so I’ve pretty much gone the route Terry said and just moving on from it and forgetting about contests. That’s exactly what is was, it was for some start up festival in Wildwood and you had to like all these pages for the vote to count and I got 500 votes. They told me and the guys in 2nd we both did so well instead of playing this start up festival we’d get spots in SoundGarden in Philly, so we were both declared the contest runner ups and they gave it to some random dude who onl got 6 votes, told us we’d have a spot by July, saw the co – runner ups got their show, emailed the organizers asking wtf is going onto no response. Total bs. Basically just promoted the crap out of it to get screwed over hard in the end. Wish I had figured that out earlier but like Terry said, it’s a learning experience that I can pass on to others so I’m pretty much ready to move on from it all, and contests in it’s entirety.

    Luckily I learned that for another contest that I entered where I had to sell 20 $10 tickets to be eligible for some some spot. Didn’t sell them, place wanted me to pay back every ticket I didn’t sell ($150 bucks), told them no and that was all she wrote. Absolutely done with contests.

    What are your guys’ stories? Does anyone have any good/bad experience with them? Hopefully some are better than mine

    I think Sean’s story is a good lesson for anyone planning to enter mix contests.

    Sure, we all know that the standard M.O. of these contests is “spam to win” but that’s more of a practical requirement because the judges can’t possible listen every entry.

    However, if you’re required to promote anything other than your own particular mix, that’s a red flag. Being required to sell tickets to br eligible is about as huge red flag I can imagine.

    Yeah thats pretty much tarded idea, that you have to sell the tickets to enter the contest ? that you self have to WORK and practiced during the contest
    Its okay, if you have to pay just the entry fee, thats pretty reasonable, but selling tickets just meh…

    My piece of .10 cents advice is, when you entered a DJ contest, just entered it for you to gain experiences, dont expected it to be OW MAN im gonna pownaged this contest im gonna be /no1 !!! , just have fun with it, and the best part is you making a connections to other fellow DJ’s which in turn in the future can get in touch with you and offer you a paying gigs and whatnot,
