Everything you learn in one genre should be able to help you in another genre. Any tips you can share?

Oh, it will help me in another genre, but it’s not the same.

The two examples I gave are a good example… Ghetto Funk seems very well suited to harmonic mixing. It is pretty easy to blend the songs. With Electro swing, it seems like it might be OK with harmonics, but the beats tend to step on each other too much, even with dropping out all of the bass. I wonder if it’s the difference between the housey 4-on-the-floor instead of breakbeat sound?

With Ghetto Funk, I’ve found that if the keys are compatible (+/-1 or A-B), then I can usually keep the mix going such that there is no gap between the Grime bassline, which is great for keeping the energy going.

I am still learning to move outside of my comfort zone, which is just Ghetto Funk right now which I have been practicing a lot (and am pretty new to DJing), but I currently intend to branch out into Electro swing, Deep House, Dub/Brostep and Electro. As I notice similarities and differences in technique, I’ll try to share them.

Try Classic Disco, excellent genre to learn , if you master that any other genre is a walk in the park , imo

I’m starting to think my difficulty with mixing Electro swing may have actually been the poor EQ center on the bass in VDJ – dialing the Bass to 0 wasn’t dropping out the kick, which caused the beats to clash a little bit.

But, yeah, Disco is a style I could certainly enjoy, you get a fair amount of that style in Ghetto Funk too, although you get human drummers more in Disco.

VDJs EQ has a reputation for not being exact, but as far as the “box” says you can alter EQ frequencies in VDJ 8 Pro.

Yeah, I have seen where the frequencies are adjusted, I need to spend some time to do that, but I haven’t had time to tweak it for my show today so I will have to re-visit it this weekend.

Even so, the EQ doesn’t feel very good to me, but I will have to play with it to see if I can tweak it to acceptable.
