ParticipantPpl really struggle to put 2 and 2 together on here, anyway…….I want to go travelling (backpacking)! I would like to DJ whilst I am travelling for income, has anyone done this? Things i have concerns about is… licences, security of equipment, wifi access, how easy it is to pick up short term work, other countries musical tastes, working abroad?
Any answer is a good answer, i have never traveled before or played outside the UK. Just looking for some advice from anyone who has done this or played in various countries.

KeymasterWell I have not backpacked but I played in a lot of countries, but I had pre-arranged gigs there.
I think it will be hard to get gigs that really pay something (aka making an income while on the road), as many clubs only take you if you look somewhat “pro” and come with some kind of reputation. All other work is usually very badly payed and I never took on any of those jobs while I was abroad.
So unless you play a tour ahead with arranged gigs I doubt the income will be sufficient to provide for food or accommodation.August 4, 2014 at 2:43 pm #2047740Annakyn
ParticipantAs I thought Terry, not looking to make a fortune just beer money but I get what you are saying will be hard to pick up work if not pre arranged , esp just for a short time.

Well, you can of course. Question is how succesful you will be. It also depends if you are just passing through town for 1 or 2 nights (in which case I think your chances are very slim) or if you are staying everywhere for a week or so (you’d have some more time to arrange something).
Playing on the “hot nights” is probably not gonna happen. You might be able to play on the quieter nights and arrange for free drinks and perhaps tips?

Participantinteresting…. I’d think that if you have an idea where you’ll be traveling to, you might be able to get in touch with some clubs/venues in those areas, send them a mix or a link to your mixcloud/soundcloud/youtube/etc… and that might help you get something going. Best of luck, I have no other input to give really, but keep us posted!

ParticipantNGDJ, I would rec. getting in contact with DJs who are from the areas of the spots you are planning to hit.
Connect with them, support them online by sharing with your peeps who you are interested in and all that jazz can go a long way.
I totally understand your initial question but it is difficult for anyone to give a direct answer unless you state where you are going. We don’t know all the licensing/visa laws for each country.
Sometimes you can just show up to a party, have a wicked awesome time dancing your butt off, make friends and get invited to play at tomorrow’s party when you finally tell them you are a dj at an afterhours. (true story!)
and sometimes you’ve gotta plan ahead.

ParticipantI travel quite a bit and currently use the M-Audio trigger finger with my laptop. Its only 2 small pieces of equipment! I have travelled and DJ’s in Japan, America and Canada. It’s best to book in advance and if you know a booking agent they can get you spots as openers! My cousin did this for me. I saw many variations of musical taste. It will be hard to tell, so maybe go to the club you will be playing a day before. The internet is a big help as well, the clubs likley have live videos and event posters of past performers.
I saw something amazing in toronto as well. It was a DJ who used 2 microsoft surface! It was running a custom software controller. It said emulator at the top and after he said it can run on any touchscreen and you only need one. This could be great for travelling he said you just create a midi controller on the same computer you would use the DJ program. I use Traktor and Ableton. If you want to travel light get a touchscreen and emulator software, I can try to find the site I never got to see it myself!
I saw you asked how to change your profile pic, can someone tell me how? I am new.
Thank You!
