ParticipantI’m in the same boat and so are lots of other people. But even if you were the only one, I think being strange is a good thing. People think I’m strange and most of my friends are too and we get through life just fine.

ParticipantNope not strange at all. I use controllers only. In fact I don’t use jog wheels. Yeah the training wheels have come off. Can I do more absolutely. I have more controls available. So I can experiment more and spend less time looking at the laptop screen. Takes some learning the control layout, but becomes second nature after a while.
So not strange at all

ModeratorHi, you are at the DIGITAL DJ Tips forums! One of the main themes here is that controllers offer a lot more functionality and features than CDJs do.
So, no, you are not unusual. Actually you are pretty typical of our average reader 😀

KeymasterWell Vintage and I both come from Vinyl over CDJs and now controllers and we both totally agree with you.
So do many professional DJs.July 28, 2014 at 4:27 pm #2047002Hulmeman
ParticipantI use an NS7 II, but eventually want to get a vinyl (time-code) setup. I’m only worried about being able to control the majority of serato functions from the mixer?

ModeratorYou’ll probably need to get an extra controller for that. I don’t think Serato will let you map functions to your mixer that easy. Not sure though. Anybody?

ParticipantIt depends on what you want to map. Serato can map extra controllers, just not all features. You can map the transport controls, the loop functions, things like hotcues, samples, sync, slip, some layout options, etc. But no crossfaders, line faders, eq’s, filters, etc. Which is kind of what you want in a DVS system. So if you’re planning to go DVS, you’re probably best off with a Rane mixer. This is built with Serato in mind, has the required DVS approved soundcard (which your NS7 probably doesn’t) and can do things like loops as well, but no hotcues as far as I can tell. Therefore lots of people end up using an LPD8, a Dicer or a DDJ-SP1 along with their DVS setup for things like hotcues.
All in all, it really depends how far you want to go. If that answer is really far, you’ll be better off staying with your NS7 if you’d ask me.

ParticipantThanks for the input fellas! I’ve been doing some research, and I’m thinking I’d better start saving my pennies. I’m planning and hoping that a lot of the gear will be a little cheaper when it comes time to purchase it in around 12 months? I LOVE the NS7, but I really want a TT setup to hone my turntablism skills.

ParticipantMixers? Maybe. The Kontrol Z2 (which can also be used with DVS, although with Traktor) was on sale just a few months ago. I don’t know if Rane does the same. I do know that you cannot expect turntables to drop in price.

KeymasterOur recommended DVS setup is:
– reloop RP-8000 Serato turntables
– Rane Sixty-Four Serato MixerBe aware that a serious DVS setup will cost you 50-150 bucks per month upkeep costs! So initial costs are relative…

ParticipantThanks Marco and Terry. I have my heart set on the numark TTXUSBs and the Pioneer DJM 900-STR. Throw in the DDJ SP1, and I’ve got my work cut out for me. I won’t be buying anything for at least a year, so I’m hoping the equipment will be a little cheaper by then?

ParticipantDon’t expect it.

KeymasterI doubt it.

ParticipantI’ve done my research, and I know exactly how much all the kit will cost me now. I’ll be watching the prices like the FTSE, so I’ll keep you informed of my progress. The Stanton STR8-150s and Pioneer PLX 1000s have made my watchlist too. Till then, it’s all about practice and music.
