KeymasterWell the iZotope effects in Serato are one of the best software effects out there, not only for DJ software but they are actually production studio quality effects (I use iZotope plug ins for Logic to produce).
Serato is very user friendly so you should have no problems starting to use it. I actually made a much more painful transition, I used VDJ, then Traktor and now ended up with Serato and am happy now for the past 2 years.
Few things you should know however:
– You have to have a controller that is on Serato’s compatibility list
– You only get the build in effects and one free to download effect pack
– The effects are extremely high quality, but do not have the huge (and in my opinion) stupid range of some other products as iZotope opted to give them a smaller usable range and make that extremely high quality, rather than having stupid over the top effects that nobody will use, except to show off
– Some more effect packs are available, but will cost extra (still I think over 20 effects included with Serato)July 15, 2014 at 5:05 pm #2043402dj_rubish
ParticipantI appreciate your response Terry and the transition from VDJ to Traktor was definitely one of the things I was afraid of. I have the Pioneer DDJ-SB which came with LE and is definitely compatible from what I saw on the website.
I really am only looking for a handful or so of effects so if they are high quality I dont think it should be a problem.
My biggest issue with the VDJ effects either they are poorly crafted and changing parameters has an unpredictable result or they are way over the top like a flanger that completely overshadows any music you have playing no matter what the settings you have it on.
I gues one of the things I am most comfortable with when using VDJ is the way it displays the waveforms. I did like the Serato copy I have so I think I may need to start playing with it a bit more.July 16, 2014 at 8:50 am #2043542Terry_42
KeymasterYeah you should feel comfy right away, you can set Serato in a mode very similar to VDJs waveform display. Just test the visual modes of it, you will see. And yes I hated the Flanger on VDJ and I love it in Serato. The Flanger in Serato does not even let you go to those over the top things, even fully cranked up it is still a subtle flanging effect.

ParticipantHey Terry how you compared the FX quality in Serato vs Traktor ?
Plus which of the FX Serato Packs you recommended to purchased ?

KeymasterI did not compare all, but a few basic ones like Flanger, Delay, Echo, Reverb and Phaser. Now do not get me wrong the Traktor effects are still good and excellent for DJing, I just find the Serato effects sounding more natural and more subtle use is easy. Of course if you want to go over the top Flanging, then Serato wont let you, while Traktor has much more range.
As for the packs, I usually only use the build in effects plus the free pack you can download. I got a promo of the other packs, but rarely use them, as some of those can go a lot more over the top. But there is something for everyone and they are well worth the money.

ParticipantI’ve heard a couple of mentions of the free expansion download. I’m just beginning to use some effects in transitions and would love some elaboration on this subject. So far I’m really loving Serato DJ.

KeymasterYou can download (within Serato DJs preferences -> expansion packs) the “Wolfpack” F/X package for free.
Check this link on how to get it:
https://serato.com/dj/expansion-packs/fxThe pack contains the following effects (I think):
Epic Reverb
Epic Verb Drop
Bit Crush
Tremolo
Transform
Repeater
Shredder
BrakerBrake
EchoCombo
Fade

ParticipantThe pack contains the following effects (I think):
Epic Reverb –> kind of like like echo/reverb stuff, its good when its in break down for a built up
Epic Verb Drop —> when you get ready to going into the break section of the song
Repeater —> my fav so far, its so easy to triggered this effect, kind of like roll in Pioneer DJM 900 Nexus, great for stuttering the beat, or vocal in instant
BrakerBrake –> who wouldnt love the record break effect? lol. The brake in this is more clearer “break sounds” compared to those find in VDJ 7, imo
