*assemble [“it”] tunes to make my own sets sound good. I see DJing as construction.

Those books are still useful and they are useful in any genre. It’s all about overlapping phrases with the right bpm in the right phase. Read them, then read them again. And start simple. You can find a lot of tutorial videos on youtube. The ones you’ll benefit from will be from ellaskins, dubspot, digitaldjtips and djbolivia. No matter what gear you have, the principle is the same. But if you have a midi controller the learning curve is less steep. It is obviously most steep if you use turntables.

I’d try making a mix you would upload. Just find a good “starting tune” and build on it. When I did my latest mix, I had planned it all out first, then recorded it in pieces, later assembling the final mix in a wav editing program.

The way I learned was to record all of my practices. I would either replay immediately in my session, download it to my iPod or even burn it to CD (yup!!) so I could listen to it in the car. The more times I heard my mixes the more clearly I could hear what worked or didn’t or help me think of ideas on what tracks I could have used instead…
