    Hi Dan,

Quite a few questions wrapped into one post.

First, there is a significant difference between creating music (producing) and mixing music (DJ-ing). While the two are more and more found in the shape of DJ/Producers (or Producer/DJs 😀 ), it’s still relevant when it comes to picking things like software, hardware and such.

So, finding out if you will be primarily creating music and occassionally mixing or the other way around would be step one. The next step would be determining what workflow works for you. Then picking the matching software. Then determining budget and finally picking the right hardware to support all this.

If you plan on doing both equally (i.e. DJ and produce), you’ll probably find out that you’ll need more gear because you don’t want to compromise on either side.

For example, the Beatpad and the S4 are two totally different things. Picking between them is only useful if you know exactly what it is you are trying to achieve.

Let us know some more about your plans and we might be able to help you a little better.

    Greetinx.

Hi DJ Vintage thanks for your reply,

Well I think I would prefer creating music to begin with, then gradually learning how to remix my tunes and others.

I’ve looked at a few videos and I came across the Reloop Keypad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXhs7_kwjKU which looks awesome and easy to get to grips with. I also researched the M-Audio Trigger Finger Pro – Beats MIDI Controller http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGR2HfZ0KCY#t=518 and this product looks as good if not better. Is this something that you think I should be swaying more to if I want to create music using a pad with the combination of my mac and a software programme?

Then I saw this video for the Reloop Beatpad and I would also love to be able to do this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQmfkDYG1Ag It looks like such an amazing tool! 😀 but this is more for mixing rather than production isnt it?

So going on the basis I want to create music to begin with, is the M-Audio Trigger Finger Pro, Reloop Keypad and Reloop Beatpad tools where I am able to create music, or am I still of the point?

what could you recommend that I need to get this started?

Sorry for the amount of questions again. You’ve been a real help so far.

    Dan

    The reloop is nice.
However before you purchase any hardware I would recommend the following:
Sit down with your production software of choice (Ableton, Bitwig, Logic,…) and create a song by software alone.
If that song is any good then think about looking into hardware.

For your first basic productions, no hardware is needed. When I am teaching my students they all just use software for the first 3-6 months until their foundation in music theory and song structure is tight enough to let them loose on hardware.

Unlikely at this time. Too much on my hands already.
