I am a little lost as to what you are trying to hook up to what and with what intended result.

You say you have an S4mk2 with an unreliable PC and you want to switch to Mac. Then suddenly you mention starting with an iPod5 because of trying Traktor DJ. Are you saying you want to stop using the S4? Do you want to use the iPod5 with Traktor DJ instead?

In the last case, you would need a DJ splitter cable to get sound to your speakers and your headphone.

You mention a provided cable. But what is it provided with, what is it supposed to connect from and to?

Let us know so we can better answer your questions.

Ok sorry – The S4mk2 is iPad/iPhone compatible/plug and play with Traktor DJ, and comes with a cable with the square end that jacks into the S4 where the USB cable goes, and it has a 30 pin flat connector that I take it was the old protocol for iPod/iPhone at the other end. The new iPad/iPods must have a new connector roughly 5mm across (the old one is ~15mm). NI recommends an iPod5, but makes no mention of how it would connect to the S4.
I’m under the impression hooking the iPod up to the S4 will give me proper cuing and nudging through the external soundcard.
If I like Traktor DJ on my iPod, I’d consider getting an iPad4 and/or a MacBook Pro for metadata syncing etc.
    Hope that makes more sense.

I’m hoping it’s a simple matter of an adapter.

Yes, the cable you have is for the “old” iPhone/iPad/iPod. NI doesn’t seem to sell the right cable either.

An adapter like this one: http://prmodz.com/store/products/30-pin-adapter-connector-to-lightning-pin/ should do the trick. No guarantees of course.

Perhaps any of our other readers have experience hooking up an iPhone 5, iPod 5 or iPad 4 or later to the S4.

    Greetinx.

Actually most people use it with a MacBook. While it is fun to use the S4 with an iPad, the experience is very underwhelming and you are severely limiting your options. You could easily do the same with a controller that costs 1/3rd of the S4.
If you want to use the S4 to its full extend you need a real computer (mac or pc) with Traktor Pro 2.

Yup – adapter works like a dream – and for $50 I would hope so. But I have to admit, it’s pretty amazing technology – the functionality you can get out of that tiny computer and an S4 was worth waiting for the mk2.

I have TP2 on my windows7 pc…. but I wouldn’t trust it in a gig (2.3GHz i5, but it gets bogged down by some phantom app I can’t trace down). The MacBook Pro I want is $1600 (CAN) so for a portable and stable stop-gap while saving my pennies, I’m very impressed for $200. I got the S4 for Scratch integration, but I love that you can have full DVS or this tiny bare-bones but still highly functional setup offered by one piece of kit.

Indeed for Traktor users the S4 Mk II is the ultimate controller at this time.

So far with my s4 I’ve used an i-phone and a second gen i-pad as well as the macbook and they all worked fine and in fact I really liked the ios version of traktor because every 4th beat is highlighted which makes it very easy for beginners to practice counting and phrasing on. Not sure what is underwhelming.
