There is a series on light over on the blog (I am sure Terry has the link 🙂 ) that is a necessary read before asking a broad question like this one. There are some recent forum posts on the subject as well.

Yeah thanks guys i´ve read the 3 parts of the lighting guide and i learned how to use dmx, but i want to know what lights are a must have, for example, i think a smoke machine, or a led bar, stroboscopic or something like that 🙂

Well for a starter kit nowadays I would go for:
    – LED fixtures or bars for the basic lighting (most can strobe too, so no need for an extra strobe) with RGB LEDs
    – A flower that will fill the dancefloor with effects (like a Revo III)
    – Nowadays I would go for a hazer rather than a smoke machine

If you have that basic setup you can then expand with whatever floats your boat. More fixtures, more bars, moving heads, lasers, more flowers,….

I can seriously recommend the new DOTZ-series lights by American DJ. They are the latest generation LED fixtures and use COB (Chip On Board) technology to get a very good results. Rather than having multiple small LEDS (the oldest fixtures with a lot of LEDS in all colors) or the later version with RGB(A/W) LEDS behind one lens (but still 7-12 lenses per fixture), these newer lights look like regular lamps again. The LEDs are actually on the printed circuit boards. This way the light comes from one spot only, the color mixing is excellent and they have a very high power output. Be sure to check them out. BTW. I am not endorsed by anybody, so I don’t care what you buy :D.

+1 on the Haze and actually -1 on the smoke. Smoke has so many disadvantages, that you might – like me – end up not using your smoke machine at all. Venue owners don’t like them because of their smoke detectors, the crowd often don’t like them because of smell and the fact that it is “smoke”, it disperses really quickly so it doesn’t really help show of the light beams from your lighting gear (which I think is the most important thing because it really enhances the effect) and it uses more fluids.
Haze doesn’t have all those disadvantages. Word of warning though. There are way less hazers than there are smokers. The prices are substantially higher, even for the “cheaper” brands. It pays to get a good one though. LeMaitre makes some very high quality stuff. Expensive though as I said. If you can get one used, it probably still is better than a cheap brand new.

    Just my thoughts.

Hey guys and i also had another doubt, in festivals, at certain points when there´s an fx and the drop comes, i dont know if its a fog machine or a haze, but what is the cloud that is shot to people? it last a few seconds

Well at festivals they have smoke and haze guns that cost more than a used car and the effect comes from mixing the polyglycene with more heavy vegetable glycene to make the smoke heavier.
