DJ 2-Easy
ParticipantHe’s not even worthy of doing weddings, giving proper DJ’s a bad name.
You need to ask your friend who paid him the 300 bucks why because I have no idea hahahaJune 5, 2014 at 12:01 am #2035835Dr. Screechex
ParticipantDJ 2-Easy –
Yes, but the question is do people really care about that silence? I know the general partier won’t really notice the difference between an ok transition and a great transition, but literally going from track to track with silence in between like an mp3 player? No one seemed to care, and they had a great time. I’m just starting to question whether or not the average crowd really cares if a DJ just plugs in an iPod and makes lots of hype announcements vs someone who really makes an effort to mix well.June 5, 2014 at 3:10 am #2035854Frank-No-More
BlockedI’d say he was having the luckiest night ever!!!….. Recently, I played a local bar last time out and technically mixed my ass off. Nuttin’ but crickets and requests for nothing but hair cut bands from the 80’s and 90’s. OMG, I suddenly was reminded why I stopped djing in the first place. I tried bring a downtown club atmosphere to the burbs to no avail. Despite the sweet blends. Anyhoo.. I’ll bet sooner or later that is not gonna fly with a more eclectic crowd another gig for the dude your talking about. Again, luckiest dj ever. Repeating tracks however it totally dirty pool. Or bad form. Thus, technically a craptacular dj. Don’t feel slighted or surprised at all. There are sheep everywhere.

ParticipantTruth is todays crowd dont really care anymore about the “technical” part of DJing, the only crowd that still care is well US DJ’s lol
I think its a trend now these days, I saw this type of thing now at the clubs nowadays,
You lucky if you can find who actually CAN mix!, but the transition is just awful !, train wreck from the gets-go, and to masked the bad mixing they usually throw some flanger effect in top of it,
Another one is just chopped mix it, in the middle of the songs, its okay if they can chop it smoothly, but they didnt,Todays crowd all they cared about is one anthem banger, another one , and another one, something they familiar with, it dont matter how the DJ presented it “technically” like you said the crowd didnt notice or didnt care
Instead of frowned upon this DJ, maybe you should take notes, of what all the tunes he droppin that everyone loves it, after all he did get pays 300 dolla for that night, and how can you do it better than himJune 5, 2014 at 6:29 pm #2035949NietzSKY
ParticipantHe didn’t ”rock the house,” Diplo or Pretty Lights or Ingrosso or whoever produced the tracks he was playing did. I can’t tell me how many times I’ve been told ”yo man, your beats are awesome” or ”nice work on this track”…… so many times I’ve had to say ”This one isn’t my production, I’ll drop mine next if you are curious” and suddenly I get looks as if I’m some sort of imposter (then again, I always avoid top 40s and nobody outside of other DJs/partyheads can usually identify a r3hab or deorro track).
Honestly, I’d suggest all DJs take up the art of production (or controllerism) as well…… outside of turntablism, DJing as an art is pretty much dead. I’d start working on/dropping original mash-ups/remixes first (with a MPC/ launchpad/ push / etc. hooked up to your kit), then go from there. 2 CDJs and a mixer or a mixtrack and a laptop w/ no production work just won’t turn heads (at least not in DC). DJs are literally a dime a dozen, it seems like every other household has a mixtrack somewhere these days……. but performers, those are rare.

ModeratorWell, since the only place -short of becoming the next Armin or Guetta- that actually pays top dollar for DJ-ing is the mobile (specifically wedding) market and being a producer will NOT get you any gigs there, I think I will stick with knowing how to create a night, handle the various programming bits and pieces they throw in at weddings and making sure the bride and groom and their guests had a wonderful night, with even auntie Jane doing a spin or two on the floor.
I can do the walking, do the talking and I can control/direct the atmosphere. So, I am in a good place 😀 .
I will however NOT play songs twice. Even if you want to play only floorfillers, there’s enough of them around to play 3 back-to-back 6-hour sets without repeating yourself. That really signifies creative poverty, imho.

ParticipantWhen you hear the word ‘Crowd Pleaser’, that’s what every DJ should be.
People think that you have to be this all technical astute mixer with loads of effects and stuff to pull a crowd. The main thing at the heart of DJaying and will always be till the day we die is the music , in other words, the tracks.
Once you have the right tracks, you can rock any crowd mixing or not, repeating or not. The key is crowd reading and knowing your audience.
I respect this chap cos he got the formula right and the party goers in this case confirmed it
Just my two cents

ParticipantThe way I’ve come to understand crowds is that they won’t care how the next song is brought it. They only care what that next song is. While i would never play like the guy did in your story, that’s how it was before mixers were a thing that everyone had. It would be the guy with a turntable, a microphone, and the most records doing your wedding.

KeymasterI disagree.
I agree that the cool thing is what song is next. But given a crowd and you would just play songs and then I come in and mix them, I guarantee it would be the spice that fuels them to go mental.Like in one of the clubs I used to DJ the owner always asked “what do you do so that people drink more and stay longer?”….
