KeymasterBeatmix 4:
– better build quality
– better pads
– better software support
– better faders
– better crossfader
– better EQ
– back I/O
– better output
– full Serato in the boxMay 23, 2014 at 1:39 pm #2033402tosatto.michael@gmail.com
ParticipantOkay, slow down. Is Reloop a reliable brand? I know you say the Beatmix has better build quality, but the G4V is made from heavy metal. Is Gemini really that bad?
I can’t find the jogwheel sise for the Gemini G4V, but from demos I’ve seen, they look nice and weighty. How does Reloop compare?
I will probably map either one when I buy it to Mixvibes Cross (my favourite by far), or buy VirtualDJ as I’ve always been a fan. I don’t like Serato (too many plugins that you need to buy with FX and Video), although outofbox pro version would be great, saving the money for those plugins.
Although the Reloop’s faders might be higher resolution (not surre on this one), they look a lot smaller. I hate when you see controllers with tiny faders (bigger the better!).
I also just noticed that the Beatmix 4 has only one maaster RCA output and nothing else. The Gemni has master RCA, balanced master XLR, booth RCA, and auxilliary input all behind the unit.
The Gemini does look more full featured, but is the build, jogs, etc. up to scratch with the Reloop? (no pun intended!)

ModeratorNot sure why you think big faders are better. Most DJ’s just slam them open or shut anyway. And if you want to do a one-handed fade-over, smaller is better even. As long as the resolution is high, you can still do minute changes if need be, but the time to make a full fader change is shorter (less distance to cover). My iDJ Pro doesn’t even have channel faders (just rotary knobs) and my MC6000 doesn’t have those long faders either. So, fader length should be way down your priority list, imho.
Secondly, if Terry answers a question (he knows Reloop well as well as most every other controller in existence), saying “slow down” isn’t the best response :D.
Some of your concerns are valid, assuming you don’t take the answers given at face value of course.
For DJ’s that only play at home and in venues with a house PA, not having XLR/balanced outputs need not be a major issue. Not having a booth would be a dealbreaker for me, but it still would not make me choose the Gemini.
My personal opinion is that you first map your workflow, then choose the software that fits you best (love Cross too btw), then set your budget and finally pick a controller.
At the end of the day it’s your choice. You are the one using it and it has to fit your style.

KeymasterThanks for your vote of confidence Chuck my friend 🙂
Yes I have limited experience with the G4V as I only played with it for like 15min on Musikmesse Frankfurt as opposed to over an hour on the Beatmix 4.
However, even though the Gemini is a tin can the overall construction did not appear to be the best. Each fader felt differently and the jogs did not spin right. Several of the connectors seem to be soldered to the board etc.
Now if handled with care (e.g. not going on a gig) it may be OKish, but everything just felt sluggish to me.Now the Beatmix, yes it got bonus points because I am a Serato user, but nonetheless it casing was outstanding. Do note even Pioneer uses the same plastic for the CDJ Nexus that costs more than most controllers….
Yes the connectors are limited, but if you play at home or in a club setting RCA is what you mostly use. At home to connect to your monitors and in a club you go half a meter into the club mixer anyways and that also has RCA.
So unless you are in the mobile trade and want to go directly into a PA, balanced is not that important. And even for most mobile applications I bring a small mixer with me that I could hook RCA into and then go into the PA speakers.Yes booth out is the only thing it really is lacking, but unless you are prepared to invest into a more high end controller most lack it in that price range and I would not go for less quality just because of a booth out that you might not use yet.
Also no matter what controller you buy, if you become more successful in the mobile business and like DJ weddings you should at least make 1000 bucks a night, or if you have a residency in a club it should at least be 500 for a set. Some of that money you will invest into getting a higher end controller anyways then.
Also I do not say Gemini is badly per se, I have seen some decent product of them, like their CDJ clones, but for me it is too much hit and miss with them to call it a reliable brand, much like Behringer. Yes they sometimes have a good thing going, but even the same product, different production charge can be totally different…

ParticipantInteresting. Was the G4V in Mukimesse a prototype (before release) or ther real deal. For example, the Gemini Slate 4 was at NAMM I think, but that was announced AAAGGGEEESSS ago and they are still making improvements for the full production moedel. I might head over to DJ City, or Store DJ soonish so that I can physically see them and try them out (DJ shops are amazing!).
Also worth noting that I haven’t mentioned before is that the Gemini G4V has VU meters on each channel as well as output. This isn’t too much trouble as most DJ software has virtual VU meters (havent checked Serato yet, though) and even if I did want a physical VU meter, I can just make one in lne with the RCA output (this will be analogue not digital).
I would like to prioritise my software first, but I simply do not know. I have Cross LE and am going to get VDJ8 Home soon (don’t you love free full versions) to try it out, but I heard Serato only works with a controller plugged in. Is this true?

ParticipantAlso, I am completely open to suggestions. I can’t have looked at all the internet with detail, so if you guys have words of wisdom on 4 chanel controllers under $500AUD (preferably under $400AUD), please let me know!

ModeratorYou are upgrading from a (sub-)entry level controller, yet clearly not ready to move on to the big leagues. As Terry says, the willingness (and ability) to spend the larger amounts of money to move to the higher end gear often comes after making some money playing out (the first year or two you will find you are investing a lot back into your dj-ing as you start playing out).
You ask specifically for a 4-channel one. Be sure you actually need a 4-channel controller or if a 4-deck 2-channel wouldn’t work.
Under the 500 AUD mark, you will be hard-pressed to find something that fits both your substantial wishlist and your budget quite frankly. What you buy now should be good enough to get you playing out (I think we can safely agree that the Ion doesn’t qualify).
I would very seriously consider looking at some young, used gear. You can get better features and quality for less money. And knowing it will only be til you made enough playing out, when you can go and fetch that brand new DDJ-SX 🙂
Not an easy choice here unfortunately. The Beatmix 4 should tick most your boxes, but you don’t seem to be convinced it will get you where you are going.
Since you said Cross is by far your favorite software, I’d stick with what I know. The only reason to start looking for something else, imho, is if your workflow changes to the point where the software is no longer capable of supporting that workflow. If you go through your DJ life looking at every new software release to see if it perhaps offers a functionality your current software doesn’t, you will be very nervous and very unhappy.
I started out on Traktor. After almost 2 years I decided it didn’t work well enough for me. By then I knew what I DID need/want in software and from there moved on to Cross (since it supported my controller, which Serato at the time didn’t). For me VDJ was never an option. And now I am Cross and not too worried about what the others are doing, feature-wise. I look at it from an interest point of view, being moderator and all here, but not to see if I have to switch. As long as Cross supports my workflow, I’ll stick with it.
Hope that helps some with the decision=making process.

ParticipantThanks, I will start looking around fo used stuff before I commit to new stuff. The problem with used products, however, is that the Reloop comes with SeratoDJ included and that won’t be able to be sold with the unit, so I will have to buy DJ software. Cross is cheap enough, anyway, so I will snatch something up if I find it cheap.
I presume by 4 deck, you mean 4 channels, but with only a 2 channel mixer and a switch.

ParticipantI’ve had a look on eBay and Gumtree (the Australia only version of eBay, which usually has what you want), and came up with nothing. There is a Numark N4, but from the US, so it will be difficult to get warranty. It also totals up to over $450 AUD with postage and whatnot, so I think it will be better to buy something new.
Also, I researched the Reloop Beatmix 4 and it was only just announced at Musikmesse 2014 less than a month ago. Tihs is why I couldn’t find for sale anywhere! I will probably wait until we get the Beatmix 4 in Australia and official prices are announced. It is predicted to go on sale in the US in late July. From currency exchange, it’s 299 euro RRP translates into roughly $440-$450 AUD, which isn’t too bad considering it comes with the full version of Serato DJ, worth $120 AUD. However, the N4, at the same price, comes with no software at all. This is why it is off my list.
If I get the Gemini G4V, I will most likely buy Cross DJ (not Cross), which only costs me $55-$60 AUD, making it $455-$460 AUD with it’s $400 AUD price tag. I personally prefer the Gemini, but I will buy the Reloop if it comes around that $450 AUD price tag. I cacn always keep the software and sell the controller for a G4V!

ModeratorThe Messe was in early May, so almost 3 months ago. Release was scheduled for May and the biggest online shop here in Europe claims 5-day delivery. Not sure what the status is elsewhere.

ParticipantCan’t find a thing in Australia, but that’s to be expected I guess…

ParticipantI have scoured Gumtree Australia and found a Numark 4Trak in good condition for $300 AUD negotiable. It is in Byron bay, which is very near the next state (and states are massive in Australia), and is about a 9 hour drive away from my home in Sydney (not including toilet breaks, rest stops, etc.) , but I guess a holiday wouldn’t hurt! (the seller has offered to ship as well)
This is a $600 AUD controller RRP and is actually better because it is $100 less than the G4V, and it is actually an officially suppourted Mixvibes controller, and neither the G4V or the Beatmix 4 are officially suppourted (yet…). You can use Cross’s MIDI mapping/MIDI learn feature, but the 4Trak has guaranteed results. I also like how the FX/Filter section is seperate. If it is mounted in it’s correct spot, it has a nice angle and it also hangs over the I/O connectors, both protecting them from abuse and letting you press the laptop right up to the unit. And if you don’t like it there, you can put it anywhere you want!
It also has all the I/O I could ever possibly need (XLR Balanced output, RCA output, booth output, and inputs galore) plus it has a standalone mixer if I ever can afford CDJs. Full length pitch fader, replaceable crossfader, user assignable stuff, touch strip needle drop, VU meters, the only thing it hasn’t got is sample pads, aalthough I could always remap keys or buy a modular sample thing.

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/byron-bay/other-books-music-games/numark-4trak-dj-controller/1047020652I know a guitar will never make you rock, but this is my best shot in this price range at the moment.

KeymasterWell first of all: The 4Trak is a really good controller. Well built and awesome features. I really liked it and it is one of the few non native instruments controllers that actually works well with Traktor also.
However I looked at the pictures in your link and I have to say this one looks VERY used. I am in a little doubt if the unit will hold up long since there seems loads of sand and other things in the unit already. And if you can see it in those crappy pictures it might be really bad….May 28, 2014 at 4:28 pm #2034530DJ Vintage
ModeratorI agree with Terry, that things has made some miles! Doesn’t look like it was cared for very well (like always sitting in a flightcase).

Participantfor what its worth, I own the G2V which is essentially the same as the g4v but limited to 2 decks.
it is my first controller and I’m new to djing.
the unit needed a firmware update out of the box, the updater available on the website didn’t work and the support was non existent.
once they updated their updater and I had updated the firmware of the G2V it worked as intended.
It is designed for VDJ and while mapping is available for traktor, the mappings for either traktor OR vdj are for specific versions of the softwares, and if you don’t have the specific version they may not work.
also the traktor mapping is more or less incomplete and imho flawed, as some buttons/knobs on the g2v no longer do anything at all if using traktor, and the ones that do work are mapped to functions that don’t always relate to the original functions of the buttons/knobs when using the g2v with vdj.
it comes with vdjle out the box, which is pretty useless and therefore you would need to upgrade to vdjpro for a price or find an alternative software and hope theres an available mapping, or make your own.
jog wheels are fine, buttons and knobs are fine, avail. functions are great if you use the unit with vdjpro. pitch faders are dissapointing as I’ll explain in a minute, and I wish the crossfader was smoother. rather than smooth transitions it jumps along with noticable gaps. this could also be a lack of skill on my part tho.
as for the pitch faders I made the stupid mistake of thinking that longthrow pitch faders meant more accurate pitch shifting, but it turns out that despite the longer fader ranges, the pitch faders are NOT high resolution, which I have a feeling will be pain in the ass in the future and will cause me to sell the unit and buy something else.
in conclusion, the G2V was a pain in the ass to set up, will probably be a pain in the ass in the future if I want to use the pitch faders to fine-tune… and I love it anyway. I really do love my G2V, but again, its my first controller, which i’m using to take my first adventure into the world of live djing, so everything is new and fun and exciting to me anyway. If my skills developed beyond what I could do with the unit I would upgrade.
One final thought, if you are forced to work harder and refine your skills further because of creppy equipment, when the time comes for you to use top shelf equipment, *sometimes* you end up having an advantage from having that handicap removed; like running with weights at one speed, then removing the weights and suddenly running a whole lot faster.
hope that helps,
Peace.P.S) I am also in australia and I had the G2V posted to me from an interstate shop, bought it online at one of these 2 stores, I don’t remember which, https://www.storedj.com.au/ or http://www.djcity.com.au/
I have bought lots of equipment from both of these stores and have had good experiences with both. Just be sure to phone them up and double check that what you want to buy is in stock in their physical shops before you place the order online.
