Rekordbox is constantly updated. So do not expect amazing new features right away. A lot of it will be bugfixing and possibly some tweaks or some say even better keydetection system. We will see.
I doubt Rekordbox will evolve into a full DJ software solution soon, since Serato has already released support for the CDJs etc. so it seems Pioneer and Serato are working closely together on their products.

Hi Terry! Thanks for the 411

I agree that they update their software however in this case their website is satiating that they are not giving any more Software keys out (surprising) until this new release is out.

It is interesting how the Serato relationship is progressing without anything new on the “Traktor” horizon for quite some time, even updates to exiting Pioneer DJ equipment firmware (DJM T1 is not mac 10.9.x or windows 8 compatible).

I understand the fact that Rekordbox is what it is however there has been nothing new on the mobile side (there isn’t even a true iPad or Android Tablet App out yet). Many DJ’s use the USB option however I like the link feature from my Laptop which affords me a bigger screen to search selections or requests. It would be nice to see an enhanced rekordbox for iPad. This would really help me.

Well they did the not giving out more keys thing a number of times I can remember and I think I had to re-sign up like 2 or 3 times at least for the whole website since my account was gone…

Well Native Instruments has Traktor, but it still is a small amount of what makes NIs revenue. The big bucks come from their other lines of technology (or so the whole internet assumes), from Reactor, Complete, Maschine,… Also they developed a mixer (Z1) and while it is only 2 channel I can see why many hardware developers might feel threatened that NI is taking the side of “only our gear works best”. I mean they did it with jogwheels also, so there is a trend.

On the other hand Serato is focused on their DJ products as a whole and they never have, nor have they ever expressed any interest in making hardware. So if I would make gear, I would make it for Serato also, or possibly VDJ. Just makes sense to use the product of someone who is not directly competing with you.

The thing is that over 90% of the rekordbox users I know still use rekordbox for only 1 thing: They prepare their set on the computer, export the playlist and CUE points (and in rare cases loops) to a USB stick and use that USB stick in a club with a CDJ setup. I have rarely seen anyone hooking up their equipment to rekordbox, because honestly such a setup is way more unstable than if you use a full DJ software like Serato or VDJ or Traktor…

On a side note, Engine, the Denon Rekordbox alternative, does have a very good iPad app. When hooked up (wirelessly) it allows you to browse your tracks, make playlists on the fly and load tracks to up to 4 SC2900/3900 players. And I can see where Phil (What IS with that name !?!??) is coming from saying it would be nice to have that kind of functionality in Rekordbox and not have to worry about the cumbersome display on CDJs and the one-knob browse operation. All you’d need would be the (network) cables to hook up the CDJs to an Apple Airport you’d have to bring and then your iPad.

The thing is, like all these kind of apps, it’s proprietary and works only with Denon Engine-ready gear, just like Rekordbox only works with RB-ready Pioneer gear.

Engine has been around for a while, although I don’t see too much development lately. Not too surprising since it’s pretty adept at what it does.

Clearly Denon had a view of the features they wanted for their gear users. Still I can’t help but think that they probably could have sold a lot more players if they had made them Rekordbox-compatible (too). Have it so someone carrying around his RB stick (not surprisingly with Pioneer gear all over the place) can roll up to a venue fitted with Denon gear, plug in his stick and just go play.

And while I think Engine is still better than Rekordbox, it won’t work with Pioneer gear, so as a DJ you’d have to keep two collections/database up. Which is not nice. I am guessing many people that have considered the SC2900 or SC3900 (and they are awesome players) will have been put off by it and switched to Pioneer just to stay compatible with the average venue setup.

Once upon a time there were three formats for video-tape (it’s the pre-DVD equivalent of recording and playback for video material for all you youngsters out there), Betamax, Video2000 by Philips and VHS. Out of the three VHS was the worst, but they were the only survivor of this war. Philips’ V2000 system died and Betamax stayed somewhat popular in professional environments, but it was all VHS from there on out. From that point on, the only way to sell videorecorders was to make sure they played VHS tapes. Not try to break open the market with yet another video format.

Then when CD and DVD came out, the industry had learned and standards where made right from the off.

Guess the market has some more maturing to do 🙂

You know that it’s Mixvibes that is developing Rekordbox for Pioneer? also all of Pioneer CDJ’s work in HID mode in Cross SO if anyone is in bed together it must be Pioneer and Mixvibes. Cross also has Rekordbox (Synch) export.

Well Well Well we have seen alot of changes recently, I guess the biggest is with the Apple – Beats Deal. And I hear that Spotify is on the block as well as a few others.

I believe the Beatport App really shook things up. Its all really about the music isn’t it.

Well still no word from Mixx on Rekordbox…

Definitely a good improvement UI wise I have to say, but I see no groundbreaking new things.
Cannot comment if it is more stable yet, only did a quick view.
