Well Rock people can be weird and even be aggressively against Electronic Music.
I would rather play Chill Rock, Slow pace stuff etc.

My sentiments exactly. Depending on how “hard” the rock band is (have you listened to their stuff?), I’d even consider staying in rock mode and maybe go for some classic rock tunes in the same genre as the band (don’t play actual tracks from the band would be my advice by the way) and possibly from the same timeframe or stuff you think fits the audience.

This is typically one of these situations where, as a DJ, you can’t stick with what you know.

I played the afterparty for the The Who concert last year (lasted about 2 hours) and I prepared tracks from the era that The Who was at the top of their game. All rock(ish) tracks. Did not play a single dance or current pop tune. None.

    Hope that helps.

Hi ! Well I already played for this type of event, well actually it was not a rock afterparty but… I knew everybody here listened to rock and ONLY rock… I started with some “chill rock?” band I know, Wild Nothing you should check their tracks (Golden Haze especially is probably the most famous and a really nice one), they loved it and they were drinking a lot also, so I knew I could play some chill electro songs, they wouldn’t even notice since it was very close to Wild Nothing, but a little bit more… electronic. Then I started playing more energetic songs and ended up with making about 40 rock lovers dancing to Far Too Loud which is not really what they listen to !

So my advice would be to make transitions with genres that are somewhat related ? You could make the same thing by playing electro songs that have a rock vibe, Robot Rock by Daft Punk, Everyone Is Someone by Felix Da Housecat or Proper Education by Eric Prydz (I’d be afraid to shock people that know the original song in that case though) for example and then go to the songs you want to play

I probably have been a mobile DJ for too long. I don’t even know “what I want to play” is anymore LOL.

Seriously, it sounds like you had succes with that approach, but unless you are very certain of your skills and (like you) know the crowd beforehand, it’s a situation that could easily backfire. So be very keen on reading the crowd and if you as much as notice the direction you want to go is not their direction, be prepared to paddle back.

The good thing is that you already know what they like for sure, saves you the trouble of finding that out first. Also they all pretty much like the same stuff or they wouldn’t have gone to see that rock band. Quite unlike a wedding where just about everybody will have something else they love 😀

I would try putting on something similar to what the rock band are playing get there attention, slam a few tracks down like that keep them buzzing after the band and then gradually lower the tempo or theme of the music and see how people react. Use some classic rock tracks. Stuff people are really familiar with.

    Just my observation.

I think it depends on the venue. I’ve been to such places where immediately after the rock show ends, a dance-friendly crowd filters in. So I think I would judge the situation depending on whether or not you’re playing to the same audience.

Thank you all for responses 🙂
I`ve talked with organizers and the event will be outdoor event.
As for the music: at the beginig there will be some rock bands, but at the end, before my performance, there is going to be some electronic Depesh Mode tribute.
So I think Im going to play Deep house/house (not too slow and not too fast). I think Ill include crossfade(Maceo plex remix) and som underwold remixes 🙂

Looks like you found the answer you were looking for Karolis, keep the vibe going but just be flexible if you need to step up a gear.

    Have fun
