I say it’s worth it, but it’s because of the way I mix. I used VDJ Traktor and Serato DJ but Cross is what works best for what I do. My advice is to get Cross DJ free and try it out for some time to see if it’s for you. No one but you will know if it’s worth.

Only problem with free is you can’t use it with a controller 🙁

Hey Vintage, what do you think of Crosse’s key detection? And do you still use mik, really need a strong opinion in this because I’m really thinking of making the jump to cross, I have an S4 using Traktor pro but Cross is now compatible with S4 and I know it won’t integrate as well if I was using Trak pro and S4 but it should do the trick.

I still use MiK exclusively. It’s much better than anything else on the market. The recent DJ Tech Tools comparison scored MiK 6.x at 95%, with 5.x running close second at 90%. The oddest thing is that Cross for iPad (they didn’t test regular Cross) scored third place with 79%. After that Keyfinder with 77% and then it tumbled down towards mid 60% and below.

In Cross you can set in preferences what you want analyzed when importing tracks. I set it to only gain (as I get key, bmp and gain from MiK and Platinum Notes already). So it only analyzes beatgrid.

I have no experience with the S4 in combination with Cross, but with standard S4 support from Cross I think it should work just fine. I saw they even mapped a video crossfader, nice touch.

    Good luck & greetinx.

Vintage, what did you think of Ferdinand’s key change wheel? Would Cross dj/MIK work well with that new key change wheel? of course there’s definetely a bit of experimenting to be done. Using the buttons in Ferdinand’s example wich are Traktor knobs and Cross’s are pretty much the same.

Yeah, the big advantage (to me anyway) is that Cross already had a feature that highlights harmonically compatible tracks in the browser list (so you don’t have to select on it or use a smartlist per key). Now when you go up or down 1 or 2 semitones, the player reflects the new key AND the highlights in the browser list change as well.

So, when you changed the key on the incoming track, after it becomes the playing track, the browser list shows the appropriate harmonically compatible tracks for that changed key!

    Gotta love it.

I think Ferdinand’s wheel is spot on an a good help (so is the strip which you can easily stick somewhere (like above or below you laptop screen for example).

What wasn’t said in the blog article is that on the regular wheel, you can also go diagonal +1. I think (but frankly I forgot for sure) it’s clockwise inner ring to outer ring. So 12B to 1A, 3B to 4A. Unfortunately I don’t think those get highlighted. But you could make a smartlist in iTunes (or Cross although I haven’t tried that yet) and get that.

Now for every key you will have the regular and the 4 semitone shifts. For the B keys you will also have the diagonal.

So it greatly increases the tracks you can work with.

    Greetinx.
