    Yep, get a controller, lol!

Seriously, there is an article (bit older) somewhere on the blog where Phil explains about his starting digital DJ-ing with only the keyboard shortcuts. Interesting read and although it’s proof positive that it is possible, you’ll see that he does think it’s way easier and more fun to use a controller.

Moneywise getting a controller shouldn’t be a problem anymore these days. 300 euro buys you a Reloop BeatMix 4 with a full version of Serato, just to name the current “pick of the month” (just because it’s a great starting controller and it comes with a full version of one of the most popular DJ software packages, which is rare – most come with a rather useless LE version that requires additional money to upgrade to the full version).

And the extra amount of pleasure you’ll have from using a controller is definitely worth it, imho.

Warning though: this stuff CAN be highly addictive (and usually is).

    Welcome to the forums.

I’m trying to keep the costs as low as possible for now so I’m thinking about buying a Numark DJ2Go. Thanks for the advice.

Another option is to go over the second-hand markets. Often you can get something with a little more “real” feeling to it for the same money.

Frankly, even though you COULD do things with the 2Go, it won’t be like a bigger controller. The jogs are not really jogs and the buttons small (especiall cue, which you’ll be using a LOT!, as much as play at least). There are no channel faders, there are no EQ knobs, no filter (especially EQ is something that is rather useful when doing transitions/beatmatching). Not sure how (DJ) software support (drivers and mappings) is for this one. Those are just a few of the things that make it less suitable for the purpose of figuring out if DJ-ing is something for you. Imho it’s more like a gimmick, or a nice b’day gift for a 10-year old.

Obviously you have to make your own choice, but personally I would not spend money on this.

Many people start this hobby and then figure out it’s not for them. Lot’s of those controllers floating the market for second-hand goods. Check it out.
