If you have no experience at all I would advise against buying something really expensive. Start small, that way you won’t have invested a lot for nothing if it turns out not to be for you. And choose software first, then the hardware to match it.

What software to use really depends on your style of music. If you’re into the organized house and techno with really strict beats you’d be better of with Traktor.
For Traktor you can basically use anything you like as any midi device can be mapped to your needs. For instance, I use a Pioneer DDJ-SR, which is intended for Serato, with Traktor. It even works better in Traktor then in Serato if you’d ask me 😛

If you’re into the more loose stuff like d&b, dubstep and/or hip-hop the elastic beat grids of Serato and Cross DJ would be the better option.
If this is for you I’d advise the Reloop Beatmix 4 as it is fully featured, comes with the full version of Serato and is nicely priced. It has everything you could ever want as a beginner. You’ll have a solid piece of equipment to learn on and grow. Once you’ve outgrown it (which will take quite a while if ever at all) you’ll have a much better idea what your requirements of a controller are.

First of all thank you for your lengthy reply it was very helpful.i have made my mind up this afternoon and gone with the DDJ-SX.i do have experience of using dj equipment but it is limited after reading numerous reviews, guides and videos i decided why start with a cheaper unit when most replace there controllers after a year and buy the upgraded model etc. i have wanted to get into it alot earlier but not had the money this unit is a fraction of the cost of the alternative cdj setup but can do pretty much the same got a lot of practice to get done but with the beast of a controller i cant wait!!! Thanks for the advice

I see, I was under the impression that you had to learn to dj first. In that case, I think you’re right in your choice. The SX is very versatile and pretty simmilar to a cdj setup, so the switch shouldn’t be much of a problem. Just watch out for the left pitch fader, it is pretty close to the jog on the left deck of the SX.

You could not be more wrong.

The major software titles available (Serato, Traktor, VDJ, Cross) are equally good at mixing any genre you like, just from a mixing standpoint.
The differences of the software titles are more workflow oriented and that has nothing to do with genre, it has to do with the human operating the controller… some like to do things one way, others some other way.
Then there are major differences in features that are actually totally independent of genre like:
    – Traktor has remix decks (which can also be used for hip hop mashups not only techno)
    – Serato has flexible beatgrids (that actually also come in handy with Trance, not only hip hop)
    – Cross has built in key detection with Camelot scales
… all features that have nothing to do with any genre, but how you like to creatively express yourself.

Of course in several forums on the internet there are loads of urban legends floating around and many people do repeat them and transfer them to other forums. Most of those marketing induced or because the website owner is sponsored or just some superstition that was taken up by the forum crowd.
For example most of my big gigs are house, trance, techno oriented, I still hugely prefer Serato (having used Traktor previously for some years). But it is not because Serato is better, it is because Serato does things the way I like to do things. Also there is never a perfect match, you just can get very close…
