ParticipantOdd that you don’t want a Dell, I’m using a Latitude business model and I can’t fault it. 4 usb ports too. Refurbed one, cost me 500 quid and it runs TSP 2 @ 2ms latency.
4-500 notes should get you a pretty decent one, go for an i5 with 4gb RAM. Hdd not important if you already got a ssd to drop in it. 15″ screens are about right, DJ booths were never made with laptops in mind so any bigger will be awkward to shoe in. Mines a 1080p display but I’m not sure if you’ll get that for less than 500.
Lenovo get mentioned a lot in these sorts of threads if that helps.March 18, 2014 at 8:57 pm #2012022DJ Vintage
ModeratorDid you consider getting a relatively young used MacBook? If it’s only for DJ-ing I would certainly recommend looking into it. And, as I have said before, I am NOT a big Apple fan. Everything I have by way of business laptop and production PC’s is windows-based. But for DJ-ing I bought a mid-2011 MBP 15″ last year and never looked back.

ParticipantI know nothing about apple laptops.
if the file system is like iOS, then I don’t want to bother.
plus I know and can tame a windows computer without any help. I’m tech support for the family.
apples OS I have not got a clue about.
I might use the laptop for other things…
I am only using my existing one for Traktor as it is not sufficient to do more with it, which is the reason for a new laptop.

ParticipantGive me a few mins while I compile a few things…You want a laptop that you can take to gigs with you or something strictly for Trakor and Ableton Live 9? Do you have need for usb 3.0 or a cd drive for that matter? Is resolution going to be an issue because 15 inchers that can do 1080p can get a little hefty for price.
The biggest things I get from your list is that, you need a “Business” end laptop with atleast 8gb of RAM. Business end laptops tend to have been build with an aluminium chases and will last out while transporting better. They usually have the TFT Matted Screens and are great against glare and are easier on the eyes. They usually have the little nob in middle of the keyboard if that’s what you’re looking for. I guess what I’m trying to get at is what kind of features do you need or want and what do you plan on using it or where for that matter.
Your £500 is like 900 cdn over here atm and I’ll see if I can link you a few things. PM me or something and maybe I’ll be able to narrow down my searches to your demographics.
(btw I was a computer sales person from Best buy…one of the best might I add but the rewards weren’t good enough)

Participantive never had a gig outside of home, although i have taken my laptop places but not regular at all.
i broadcast online on video stations, streamed from my tower pc.
the laptop i want to do both ableton live 9 full, but not suite and also run traktor at the same time. which will be using my xone4d soundcard.
as long as it does that, then itll do anything else i would want it to do.as long as it is clear enough to see traktor / ableton live, then full hd doesnt matter. although i have a second monitor i can use if i wanted a bigger view.

Participanthow about the lenovo g510?

ModeratorHey Rick,
The Lenovo is a good choice imho. Guessing you will be going for the i5 version. A slight upgrade in RAM-memory (go 8GB if possible) would be good. As would an SSD. The latter is the biggest speed boost you can give an existing machine.
About the Mac. OSX is more like windows than it is like iOS, so that shouldn’t be what stops you. Both Ableton and Traktor run on OS X as does office (I have Office 365 running on mine). Hope that answers that question for you.

Participantyes it would be the i5 version of the lenovo
i have a 120gb samsung ssd in my tower that is only for producing. and is seperate from the main drive which has windows and other software installed. the drive is dedicated to producing, with only ableton installed on it and related samples etc.
i also have a 64gb iirc installed in my current laptop.
one will be moved to the new laptop.
i can easily get some more memory (which i intend to do) the lenovo g510 has 2x8gb memory slots.
there are 2 local suppliers i use for parts.March 19, 2014 at 12:59 pm #2012385DJ Vintage
ModeratorThe thing with SSDs is that they offer the highest performance gain when used as systems/programs disk. So, you’d want at least windows and ableton on the SSD. Might cut it up into two partitions. One for system and the other for producing related data, like samples.

ParticipantRick, that is the beauty of Apple. You don’t need to “have a clue” cos it just works straight out the box.
March 19, 2014 at 11:50 pm #2012618Grant
ParticipantThe beauty of PC’s….once set up and properly maintained (scheduled maintenance) runs as smooth if not smoother then apples and at the fraction of the cost…although I admit that apples design is pretty top notch…but just get an ASUS or a Samsung to counter that :p

ModeratorThe “beauty” of the (windows) PC in my opinion is that you can tweak it to your liking and use ANY piece of third-party gear with it. Also you can stick any kind of windows on any kind of hardware, where Apple has a tendency to stop supporting older hardware after only a few years. And this is a major advantage, imho.
BUT … proper setup and maintanance for a windows PC is not an easy feat if you don’t know diddly about computers. Combined with all the other reasons Apple stands out as a music/dj machine, makes for a very attractive package for DJ/Producers (and sound engineers, but that’s another story).
So, while I agree with PC’s being able to run smooth, stable and glitch-free, I have to admit that it takes a whole lot more work and knowledge to get there than it would with a Mac.
Hence even my support for Mac in this specific segment.

The Lenovo mentioned above looks perfect for my needs and budget. One thing though, does anyone know if it has a TFT Matted screen?
I could not find that information at the link provided and a matte screen is my main requirement from a laptop.any help given would be much appreciated!
