ParticipantI’m a Serato user, so this might not be a good option for you, but I’m moving up from the MTP2 into a Reloop Terminal Mix 8. I chose the TM8 because of the familiar/similar layout, long pitch faders, RGB pads and great Serato DJ functionality. The jogs look to be great, I like that it’s AC powered as well. I think this is the perfect step up into a more pro-level controller for me. I’ve never used Traktor or even seen it in person, so I don’t know how this might help you personally, but thought I’d throw that out there… Keep us posted! Moonshadow

ParticipantI understand your problem I use to think I needed a lot of controllers to get what I want.
now I only have a twich and x1
thats it.I have configured my controllers to fil in gaps, I cant use the one without the other many buttons on the twitch I remaped to do many things.(fx combos,fx,trigger deck 3/4 for loops etc.line gain also trigger filter etc many options)for your pitch problem u can configure pith sensitive in traktor its a pushbutton on the twitch.
if I rotate it it wil mive pitch 0.1 press and turn wil move it 1.0.my x1 is just for loops hotcus and fx 1/2hoop u find your way

ParticipantI know about the TM8, which is also considered. It is a bit big though. Software is not a problem, I can make my own mapping from scratch if needed and I already own Traktor Pro 2. I didn’t ask which controller I should buy (I can do that myself just fine), I asked wether it would be a waste of money to buy one in the first place. I understand your point as well koniobomama, but that would mean ditching the ‘old school’ beatmatching and simply using the right bpm and pressing play at the right time. And I do really miss having proper analog filters, I wonder why so many controllers don’t have them these days.

Participantin traktor u have a few options,in the fx list u got a filter sounds great maybe map it with a another fx.
I have ditched oldskool mixing and now I got time to use fx and deck 3/4
I play my songs less then 2min and constantly playing songs with BPMs of 100 to 135
so I made my life easierMarch 12, 2014 at 12:02 pm #2010175Marco Solo
ParticipantI use the X1 for fx 1 and 2 which are single effects (delay t3 and tape delay), so at the moment I cannot set a filter in there. I might switch them to 3 and 4 which should give the option to get a filter in on the x1. But there’s no need to use an effect then, I can just map a knob to the filter, no big deal.
I will not ditch old school mixing, simply because I need the experience for when there are only cdj’s available. Besides, I like manual beatmatching and I would miss it dearly. You limit yourself incredibly by simply ditching these techniques. Using cds’s would also be possible on four (or more!) decks with manual beatmatching, even when playing 2 minutes of each track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Zdj7Cutoc8
And Santa Creek, does your TM8 fit in a backpack? I haven’t found any that will fit it. If it won’t fit in a backpack I cannot use it.
Does nobody else have experience with upgrading hardware?March 17, 2014 at 12:25 pm #2011341DJ Vintage
Moderatorwell, seems you are in a bit of a spot there. You want something that fits in a backpack, yet at the same time has big(ish) jogs, long pitch faders, 8 performance pads and a boatload of knobs, two/four of which should be dedicated filters (or some useless knobs that you can make into filters).
Good news is that they make backpacks for just about every imaginable controller these days, so that should help.
Upgrading gear is never an easy proposition. The only good thing is that by knowing the limitations of your current setup, it’s way easier to come up with a demand/wish list for whatever new gear you are considering. From that point on it’s a matter of budget and lots of jigsaw puzzle.

ParticipantThanks for your response, Vintage.
I’ve narrowed it down to 3 options:
– Pioneer DDJ-SR
– Vestax VCI-400
– Stay with my current gear. The TM8 is too big, period. The DDJ-SR is great because it features velocity sensitive pads and enough outputs. It has four deck controls but no dedicated faders and stuff. I don’t think that’s a problem though as most of the time deck D is a remix deck and I have no problem at the moment with pressing a button to switch deck controls. The VCI-400 has dedicated deck controls, but not really enough outputs to make it a long term investment. Also, the pads are a little small.
So I’m leaning towards the DDJ-SR if I upgrade in the first place. The main problem now is to decide wether to upgrade or wait for different gear to come out, although that could be a while. The good news is I have until the end of april to decide, that’s when the cashback offer from Pioneer ends.

ModeratorAlways an issue, those sales bonusses :-).
Quite frankly, looking at what was spotted at the NAMM in California and at the Prolight+Sound last week in Frankfurt, it seems the tendency is now towards mk2’s and improvement on current designs, more than on coming out with radical new stuff. It’s all pretty much following the same pattern. Determining factors are big/small jogs, pads yes/no, DJ software (although it seems to be a total Serato bonanza recently), color (white, gold, platinum, carbon just to mention a few) and such.
I understand the SR (as well as the SX) are great controllers. Have no personal experience with them other than the odd toying around with them on shows though.
In short, with the two main product shows behind us for the year and the direction gear development seems to be taking, I don’t expect any really shocking new products to hit the market anytime soon.

ParticipantYou’re right, most new products are mk2 stuff or other colours. I think I’ll go for the SR, but I’ll sleep over it a night. I have a gig coming up next sathurday, so I might be able to use it already there. If it fits in my current backpack that is. Or use an overnight bag.
What did you think of the pitch fader position? Was it annoying?March 17, 2014 at 8:40 pm #2011528DJ Vintage
ModeratorYep … Bax-Shop has you covered. Order before 22:00 and delivered tomorrow. Even have time to get acquinted with it before your gig saturday (where are you playing?).
The pitch faders are ok. Lots of room around them, so not much chance of hitting stuff by accident. Whether you like the symmetric or a-symmetric look is a matter of personal preference. I don’t really care. At the end of the day it’s what you have gotten used to.

ParticipantI don’t care about the asymmetric layout either, I have no preference. Currently I use symmetric, but it’s not like that’s the only thing I can play with. I play in d’Oude Stoep in Vlaardingen. It’s not a full on EDM gig, more like a mobile dj gig. It’s even harder than a EDM gig at times, because you can’t see how people are enjoying the music as easy as a venue with a dancefloor.
I guess the pitch faders have more room on the SR, I heard some complaints that they were too close to other controls on the SX, but they are longer as well.March 17, 2014 at 9:50 pm #2011555DJ Vintage
ModeratorYeah … same with the 4-channel MC6000 vs 2-channel MC3000, more cramped

ParticipantIt is done, my order for a DDJ-SR plus prodector and a fitting bag has been placed.

ModeratorGood man! Let us know how Vlaardingen went, ok?
Break a leg.

ParticipantI will, but I’ve played there a couple of times already, just on my Mixtrack and on fridays. So next sathurday will be a double first.
I wonder how it will sound live. -
