Well, I assume that you’re reffering to EDM-Trap and not Hip-Hop Trap (Yes there is a difference), The difference is in the bassline mainly (I’m not clear on the exact technical terms to use) but Electro-House uses kick drums, whereas Trap uses deeper extended basslines as well as snares and hi-hats. EDM-Trap is a cross between EDM and Hip-Hop in my opinion. Trust your ears and listen to more music from each genre and you should be able to pick out the difference. You might try listening to an Electro-House song you know well, and then finding a good Trap remix to it. (please bear in mind, that like all genres, there are good and bad productions, so search around)

I’d tell anyone who is playing trap or wants to play trap to have fun with it. Play the EDM and Hip-Hop styled trap sounds, but intermix it with actual Hip-Hop…provided you don’t get some douche of a manager/promoter demanding you to not “blacken” the sound.

Bring in some Hip-Hop sensibilities, scratching, tricking…I’ll bet you go places.

I agree with D-Jam, however if the place you’re playing at is mainly EDM, I would say stick to Hip-Hop tracks that have similar production styles or cross-genre appeal (Between Hip-hop and Trap) such as “Shabba” by A$AP Ferg, Wild For The Night by A$AP Rocky and Skrillex, Mosh Pit by Flosstradamus featuring Wacka Flocka Flame. Or you might even try finding good trap remixes of popular hip hop classics/hits from then till now.

(Granted I’m aware that the tracks I mentioned aren’t exactly traditional or hardcore “Hip-Hop” but I was more focusing on the crossover appeal between the genres)

Trap kinda reminds me of Miami Bass or whatever that genre was during the auto sound system craze. I think nowadays it’s Hip-Hop that borrows from Dubstep. Checkout online music stores like Beatport for their top 100.

So trap is hip hop influened EDM using an 808 drum kit. AKA rolling hi-hats and snares and drops with heavy, heavy bass. Some big name trap producers include:

Diplo, Flosstradamus, Brillz, Bro Safari, RL Grime, Baauer, Yellow Claw, DJ Snake, Loudpvck, UZ, Party Favor, TWRK…

HOWEVER!!!! All trap is not like these guys. I personally enjoy chilled out kind of stuff that is not as generic as most trap music.

    Songs like:
    Branchez – Truth
    What so Not – Jaguar
Parachute Youth – Awake Now (What So Not Remix)
    Madeon – Technicolor (Grandtheft Remix)

I have a couple trap mixes on my soundcloud. Check em out!! soundcloud.com/Mazierskkk

Also, trap is generally around 70/140 bpm or 100 bpm. 100 bpm stuff could be considered “twerk” music. It is not always those two bpm’s though; my trap playlist goes from 70 to 160 bpm and everything inbetween.

It’s rather odd. I noticed the Dubstep scene seemed to “migrate” towards Trap. I kinda jumped into EDM with Dubstep, and I really don’t get the big deal with Trap… That’s of course my opinion

Saying that, there is one song i really like (Harder Better Faster Stronger (Dillion Francis Remix)). And some hybrid-trap stuff really sounds quite nice (Pumpkin Blood (The Chainsmokers Remix))
