ModeratorUpdates should have nothing to do with the problems you talk about. My primary look at things is that if it worked and you didn’t change anything and it suddenly stops working (normally) that something has broken. It can be either software or hardware. Since it’s both the mousepad and the mouse, this pretty much rules out those pieces of hardware. So I am leaning towards something in the software. The big question being … what!?
Do you have the idea the laptop gets very warm/hot after a couple of hours working?

ParticipantThe laptop is sitting on a flightcase sliding shelf and it does get very hot.
It’s been a couple of months since I last did any dj work with the laptop, since then I have updated Traktor twice and have not updated windows since I reinstalled the whole laptop.
Cheers

ModeratorThe reason I ask is that when problems start after a period of working and especially if they seem to have disappeared next time you fire the machine up, there is often a temperature issue. It is very well possible that the temperature reached a point at which it affected some functions and that the temperature dropped somewhat over the next hour after which the buttons “magically” started working again.
Solutions could be a laptop cooling pad for example.
It’s still weird, but then again … it’s IT. Lovely when it works, otherwise …

ParticipantI would love to get my hands on a Mc Book pro 15″

Participantwhat I meant to say is that I would love to get a MacBook Pro as they seem to be far more stable and less buggy than windows systems, but with the prices they are ( and a wife) there is not much chance of that happening, even second hand they are going for a lot of money and no guarantee what you are getting.
Are MacBook’s really so stable and better than windows or is it just hype?
Cheers

ParticipantYou should still do updates because they can help with drivers and power management which can help with your heating issue. But as Chuck says a cooling pad should help. Changing laptop brands won’t make much of a difference if there is a heat issue.

ParticipantI agree Mista Clean! If it’s a heat issue then you can have the best laptop in the world and it won’t make any difference.
I found this simple idea on “Amazon” to let the laptop breath better, so I think I’ll give it a go.
Over MacBook’s, In the past I have had quite a few issues with Windows freezing and other buggs, it’s taken me some time to get my laptop tweaked to the way it is now, It just seems that after reading around that MacBooks don’t have the temperamental running issues of windows, especially when running software like “Traktor and Serato” If that is true? I have no idea, but 99% of all the working Dj’s won’t use anything else, maybe it’s just a fashion thing 😉
It very frustrating and just not good that when I go to do a show that in the back of my head I can’t trust my laptop, I always have a second laptop behind me with “Traktor” up and running.
There probably is no laptop that is 100% crash free, including “Richie Hawtin” and his top of the range McBook famous gig/you tube crash, but if I can go to a gig with peace in my mind then the whole evening starts stress free and more enjoyable.
Cheers

ModeratorIndeed, there is no such things as 100% technology. Even MBPs crash (had it happen twice, once while practicing – no sweat, once at the beginning of a gig – BIG sweat!). And I have had windows laptops that worked like a charm.
Most updates are ment to fix problems (other) people experienced, the other reason for updates is to plug security risks. The latter isn’t really important for a non-internet-connected PC/Laptop. That leaves problems you are experiencing. Obviously the heat issue COULD be such a problem more people might have reported and that they fixed.
However, fixing a heat issue through an update seems unlikely. The only thing to prevent heat issues is to prevent the computer from getting, well, too hot 😀 Keep in mind that DJ-ing is relatively heavy on a computer. Especially if you do a lot of keylock stuff, multiple streams of audio and such. There will typically be a lot of disk i/o as well. And you are usually performing in environments that aren’t the coolest, clean air places. A place packed with people tends to heat up rather quickly and stuff like smoke machines and hazers don’t do much for electronic gear either. Good thing we stopped smoking in public venues!
As far as Apple goes. I prefer a MBP over Windows, but not for hardware reasons. In general the inside is the same as a windows laptop. Intel CPU’s and chipsets, same memory, same hard disk, etx.
What sets a MacBook apart for DJ-in purposes, amongst other things, is:
* full metal enclosure
* backlit keyboard (for those dark DJ booths)
* better audio drivers (or rather, no use for external audio drivers, it’s all built-in)
* power connects with a magnetic connector, no breaking it off anymore (and this is bigger than many realise, broken off power connectors are one of the predominant failures of laptops)Nothing you can’t live without, but all things that make your life a little or a lot more easy.

ParticipantWell my Dell xps has an aluminum body and a backlit keyboard, the backlit keyboard being fantastic and would never do without again, it does have the worst power adapter connection I have ever have had on a laptop, I usually tie it up with a zip tie so it does not come loose.
The audio sound/drivers come from my “Numark 4 trak” latency running at 512, laptop has Intel i3 sunnybridge,4gb ddr3 ram, Nvida 512 graphics.March 4, 2014 at 8:54 am #2008062Terry_42
KeymasterAs for having the same internal some people are missing a fact that many outside the IT industry do not know.
Well an MBP has an Intel processor and a cheap no-name has one, still the MBP (and for example a HP zBook) are still much more expensive.
This is due to the fact that all electronic parts come in grades of quality.
So while Apple (and HP, Dell, Lenovo in their premium or business lines) only use A and A+ grade components, in your 200 bucks cheap no-name laptop you might have grade C or D hardware. The fun thing about that is that such a C or D component might have the same product lifetime as the A+, but it is much less likely. So we are dealing with statistics here. And of course also an A+ grade component can have a lemon in it, it is just much much less likely…The thing that sets Apple apart from HP, DELL and Lenovo is only that they design their own chipsets and have custom made mainboards build to their specs, but most other parts are generic indeed. (Aka the only other HW manufacturer who goes into the deal to incorporate its own chipsets and custom instructions on building was Alienware before they were invaded by Dell)

ParticipantThe biggest advantage with the MBP is the vertical integration. As Apple make both the hardware and the operating system, there are far less issues with things like drivers. Not saying they don’t happen but they are less common. Also OS X is derived from a UNIX core which is inherently stable. All of this helps with the image of “it just works” and contributes to the popularity of the MBP among DJs. There’s also the sheer build quality of the MBP, it’s made from aircraft grade aluminium which makes it pretty solid.
That’s not to say that the build quality from other manufacturers isn’t good, quite the contrary in fact. As Windows does run on all manner of 3rd party hardware, you can pick yourself up a decent laptop from around the £599 mark (note I say decent, obviously you can get better, but if you go much below that price you often find a number of compromises to meet that price.)

ParticipantI do agree with the core & drivers plus side of everything being under one roof, that just makes sense, wether the materials used in 1000 windows laptop are less than a 2000 MBP, I need more convincing.
As a company I hate Apple for there bully boy business tactics, there refusal to allow so many aftermarket product to work with there products and what I believe artificially keeping there prices high, I do believe they make very good products, but I do not believe the products are worth the priced they charge.
With keeping everything under there control they have complete control of the prices, suppose it’s just pay up or shut upMarch 4, 2014 at 1:21 pm #2008120DJ Vintage
ModeratorYes, what is described as bullish behaviour is exactly what makes the MacBook/OS X experience what it is. Apple don’t have to worry about all the zillion third party hardware users. All they need to do is to make sure it works with kit they “approved” and finished.
It’s the reason I don’t like Apple either (except for my DJ laptop, all of my PCs/Laptops are Windows). I prefer to have full and total control over my machines, another thing that is hard(er) to do with a MacBook. This is all irrelevant for DJ-ing, as I only want the DJ software on there, hook up some USB gear (notably controller(s), external HD and perhaps a mouse) and for the rest I need it to be as plug/play as possible.

ParticipantTbh it’s a double edged sword. What makes the OS X experience so stable is the same thing that people dislike. Apple will cut off older hardware / support for older 3rd party peripherals which enables them to keep the OS code base cleaner, less redundant / orphaned code lurking in the background causing conflicts.
Windows is a different beast entirely, as MS retain support for hardware / peripherals that are from the year dot, it means that stuff can continue to work, but with that comes some pretty messy backing code for the OS. there’s still a bug in the Windows 8 kernel that has been around since windows 3… In fact it reminds me of the awful mess that was vista… (sorry this is deviating off topic) but the idea behind the OS originally codenamed Longhorn was looking very promising: clean code base, new file system to replace NTFS and a whole long list of bold changes. Unfortunately MS backed down from practically all of the original promises (in doing so it appeased developers) and gave the world Vista instead… thankfully windows 7 put most of that mess right!!
it really all boils down to personal preference at the end of the day, one is not better than the other. For me the things I like about the Apple software / hardware combination would drive some people mad, but it is what works for me.
