Hah-hah. Not quite. This is what happens when everyone and their kid sister is a DJ.

Depends on the subject of using your own name, for a local promotion i used my last name, why? cause my first name in the local scene is way too common (like Steve, Michael) for non local promotion i used my first name which is “Rizki”, catchy kind of like a mix between whiskey and frisky (cat food) and Tom Cruise movie lol

    Hi Eliah,

Looks like we can do a little bit of soulsearching here. 🙂 I’ll give you some things to help you find that perfect name and think of your branding…becasue it is all about how people perceive you! NOT about what you think people think of you.

    Who is your ideal fan?

    1. Don’t think about really what type of music you play but rather what they would like. Are they into EDM, House, DEep house, more underground, dub, hip-hop, top 40s, country music, national anthems….lol. you never know.

    2. Where do they hang out? both offline & online

    3. What are their ages?

    4. Lifestyles…are they into fitness, fashion, partying, fun-loving, drag queens, travel, sports, computers, fluffy furrythings, nudist camps?

    5. What religion are they? (you’ll be suprised at the amount of gigs one DJ can get as the go-to bar mitzvah DJ in the town or the only Sihk DJ in a metropolitain area!!!)

    6. Are they single, married, straight, gay, living in an awesome sexual utopia somewhere in the south Mediterranean sea? (maybe that does exist!)

you can also do this for your ideal client or venue

    1. Who are they? professional, religious, nightlife…so many ways to think of who you want to work for and who you want to pay you.

    2. What are their major needs? Do they need to entertain 400 sober guests for a few hours or would you want to DJ an open-bar thing?

    3. What are their major obstacles? Will they have ppl of the same age group, mixed ages, mixed races?

So based on different answers to what you want your ideal fan to be and who your ideal client or your ideal gig is…. you can start thinking of branding and a name.

like if you are more for a partying crowd…something formal wouldn’t work.

likewise, if you are looking to have a more polished look for high paying clients…something like DJ
Buttwiper isn’t going to work. you’ll have to have something to attract them, and you’ll have to craft your bio and any social media post with them in mind. so swearing like a drunken sailor like me is out of the question!

I love names that are not even real words… I love this app http://wordmergeapp.com/ 😀 it combines two words into one.

Branding is about how you connect & communicate with people not just about your name & logo. So looking at what those ideal people are into that’s how you would create your brand…your words on social media n your music profiles connect and communicate with people…attract the right ones.

Simple question…is this “other person” someone locally to you? Or just a name in another city/state/country?

If it’s someone established in your town, then I’d agree on a name change. If not, then don’t worry about it.

Well, for example if I wanted to promote my mixes on a social medium like Youtube or Soundcloud and someone is already using that DJ name and has a following…What I don’t want is someone searching for me and getting someone else instead and any subsequent confusion.

How “known” is this person? Does he have loads of mixes and tracks online? Playing all over?

Or is he some hobbyist/bedroom DJ?

If you keep thinking any name is “off limits” then you’ll never find one. I would not take a name used by someone who is known. If you still don’t want to chance it, then use your normal name, or come up with a “normal sounding” name that rings nicely.

I’ve had some who believed I copied my name from the late DJ AM, but I’ve used the name “D-Jam” since 1992, thus there was no real way either of us knew of one another. When AM blew up, I simply felt his scene/sound differ too much from mine for it to be an issue.

If Eliah Holiday is your real name that would be an awesome name to use. Me personally I prefer name that sound like a real person, but not quite. Calvin Harris is a prime example. You’s think it was his real name, but it gives you a blanket to hide under if necessary. I think when you are establishing yourself you don’t want anything pretentious. But Eliah, Elias or Elijah Holiday/Halliday etc fits that perfectly.

Thanks for the responses. Yeah, I considered just the full name. I use to simply go by DJ Holiday, but I see there’s actually a few who use that now. On a similar note have any of you used more than one DJ name? Like I mainly do House/Techno but I also love dub and have a whole theme night for that planned and was considering using a different DJ name that fits the theme I’m going with for that night.

I kind of used two names, on my other names i reverse name from my real name, my real name is “Rizki Lamid” on my other dj name i used “Ikzir Dimal”, kind of give that middle-east flavor to it lol

I did some research … DJ Happy Holiday is not taken (not by anyone making any of the first Google pages). I think it has a kind of uplifting quality to it. 🙂

Heh heh, well I guess I get an association with Happy Hardcore which I can’t stand. Too, I’m a moody basterd, lol. Kidding aside I think I’ll go with the full name. I see a lot of DJs use their real names, though obviously a catchy DJ name that’s easy to remember obviously does well for marketing. I think about the success of Deadmau5; the name and headgear ( well, music too obviously), Daft Punk too…Now that I think of it a cool DJ name and a helmet seems like a good recipe for success.

DJ Holiday would be pretty cool. I’m not a fan of the whole “DJ name” thing, though.
