I think the problem here is really going to be volume rather than quality. Have you considered very good headphones?

I would have to agree with Phil, maybe good headphones and a controller that lets you mix the cue with master sound would be the way to go.
If you really need speakers for that low volume the M-Audio AV40s are quite good and have a good volume control.

Yeah, there is always the HD25-II and new HD6’s from Sennheiser, KRK have a nice set of cans (more for producing than DJ-ing though).

However, as a sound/studio engineer, I have to say that producing/mixing in headphones is sub-optimal at best.
I know many engineers/producers that will mix at about speech level (volume), so getting good speakers without turning them up too loud can work. You’ll have the occassional bit where you want to turn it up to check if you are on the right way.

Mixing loud for prolonged periods of time is bad on many levels, not in the least because of the potential for ear damage.

As far as speakers go. KRK (5s/6s) are generally the obvious choice when you want a very good quality/price ratio. And the general idea with studio speakers is “you get what you pay for”.

Thanks for the replies guys, sorry I should have been a bit clearer in my original post.

I do actually have a rubbish stereo and speakers in the flat to make do. However I cant handle using the speakers now because the sound quality is so poor and even more noticeable since buying a set of good headphones. I can play music loud enough for me to be DJing without pissing off the neighbours. I dont like things too loud anyway at home as I have tinnitus and poor hearing in my right ear.

I’ll check out the speakers already mentioned anyway. So thanks again 🙂
