    Hey Phil,
How would you do this? I am confused as to seeing many djs using the X1 a laptop with traktor and a club mixer, but then im not sure how they would beat match? hehe 😉

Not sure what you’re asking. You do exactly what you said – beatgrid the tunes then let Traktor keep them in sync.

Another way that is more accepted as a form of DJing (not saying that what u stated above is not DJing but is frowned upon a lot because of the fact you are using sync) is the exact same setup but using timecode to control Vinyl or CDJs and using the X1 more for effects and samples…(Timecode for CDs Sucks on Traktor so it would be Vinyl)

For sure mate! But the thing is i have not seen a vinyl set up since i left the USA in 2008 lol So that is not going to happen… And CDJ’s is all you will find here in the dj booths or the festivals so that is not going to happen for me either, thats merely a back up for me now! I love digital!!! Just want to simplify things as i travel a lot here in Mexico. Love my S4 but can be hard to fit in to some booths! And the sync for me is just a tool! The only people that care about sync are other djs and if they want to hate on me then thats okk! =) We all have our own opinions and i respect that! Im all about the Good vibes! hehe And thats why i ask this question above, so i wanted some other opinions on the matter! So i appreciate it! =)

Yeah I have an X1 with my S4 and a midifighter pro Beatmasher…and i know what u mean about finding space in a booth…its a PITA…I always bring 1″ foam with me so i can lay it over the Turntables or CDJs. As I tried gigging with an X1 and was totally not happy with it at all. I love having the platters and all the functions right on my S4 instead of having to go into a different mode or shift modifiers to do everything on an X1. When theres a will theres a way to make shit work with ur S4

ive been recently playing with the new k2. its a bit easier to use than a single x1 but if you use 2 x1s or 2 k2s, you can easily have all you need without having to switch layers or use shift functions.

as you said, you gotta make sure you beat grid all your songs. since im not totally comfortable with the set up, its harder to do some spontaneous experimental mixing which usually require a jogwheel. im thinking of adding a denon sc controller to my setup in the future to help with this. although still hoping a smaller controller with a jogwheel comes out soon

I’ve used the X1 and i like it.. I have had it since it came out so im quite familiar with it and its what im use to now hehe =) Thats why i was thinking about just getting a soundcard and then have my laptop and im good! But yes, that is true about the jog wheels….Think i will just have to set hot cues and loops for my experimental mixing like i got going on my S4 right now 😉 Gotta love traktor!

I use my Macbook with my X1, you don’t actually have to use sync with this you can if you so desire use the slider on the traktor software with pitchbend. However the sync function just makes it a whole lot easier, I play quite a bit and in my opinion it is the tunes that matter, if the crowd are jumping, who cares if another DJ is scowling at you over your shoulder.

This is how I use Traktor as well. Put Traktor in external mode, route decks a-d to channels 1-4 on the mixer, and a pair of X-1’s controlling loops, fx, etc and away you go. If you’ve got all four decks running (if you’re using traktor why wouldn’t you?) there is no time or need to fanny about beatmatching with jog wheels. Your time and skills are better used remixing and mashing up your tracks.

What is really cool is that there is a 4 deck mapping for the X1 over at DJTT that feels EXACTLY like the stock mapping, only difference is, you use the FX Assign Buttons to switch between decks A/C on the left and B/D on the right, now if you wanna FX assign you press the same buttons + shift. Otherwise completely identical workflow, so you have all for decks in one X1 and with the LED feedback it works perfectly!

I also played with the Reloop Contour and the A&H K2 today, which are about the same form factor as the X1. The X1 fitted my specific needs more, but if you want a 4 deck, small footprint modular controller and it fits your workflow, the Contour is a really cool small unit with a Jogwheel that has 4 different modes and feels really nice 🙂
