I wasn’t 100% clear on what happened but I think someone else changed out the next song he was gonna play with it’s raining men? If so that is absolutely hilarious!!!

2 weeks ago I playin a gig at a local bar. I was late setting up, so I couldn’t prepare everything I typically would for a set. Apparently I forgot to turn on the setting “lock playing decks”. For those that dont know, this feature prevents you from accidentally dropping a new song on the deck that music is currently playing out of. So thats exactly what happened. Since I wasnt expecting this, I thought, in my mind “ohhh %$#@!!! Why did the music suddenly change”. But the funny thing about the “transition”, is that people actually liked the sudden drop that happened. Luckily the new song dropped right on the 1-beat and people thought i did it on purpose, so i played it off like I did, and laughed it off. The only person that noticed I made the mistake was one of my friends, who also DJs. I went up to him and jokingly said “wasnt that a great transition!”. He then called me out on it, because he knew exactly what happened lol.

by the way….great video. I think someone pre-edited this track and probably renamed it “Rihanna: We found love” in the DJs library. that way, when he was printing his CDs, he figured it would be the original version.

I had to play a gig one time at an event I hosted together with a friend of mine, and for some unexpected circumstances we got way more drunk than we should and at that point we still had to play our sets.

But yeah, I started off and it actually went pretty well, I didn’t make any mistakes and the crowd really seemed to like it, but when I got halfway through my set I suddenly started to feel really sick and somehow tried to tell my friend to look for some bucket or stuff, which he just didn’t understand because of the music being ridicously loud – so I ended up puking on his shoes and trousers right in the middle of my set ;/ I even finished playing after that and most of the people there were actually amused about it, I got some thumbs up and stuff .. so that accident improved people’s mood some more ; )

Even the security guy noticed it and got me a coke and some chips afterwards 😀

Bad thing about it, there were a lot of people who knew me so the story was all around Facebook the next day 😛 But it helped me get some attention .. ; )

Half the club thought I said the n-word on a shitty house PA system! . . . especially bad because I was the only white guy at a hip-hop club!

I usually said “Thanks for coming down to Knicker’s Tonight” after stopping the music at night’s end. That night after close, the staff came up and said “Hey Mike, make sure you hit that ‘Kerr’ extra hard next week!”

Funny thing was, nobody in the crowd confronted me about it and I was totally clueless until afterwards. Some people asked the the bouncers what was up, but they said “no, no, he’s cool.” Thank god.

Many times I’ve started just fooling around mixing songs, then a half-hour in realize I just put together a great set and wished I’d been recording from the beginning.

A while back when I was much more attracktive than today 🙂
Waitress came in the booth to bring me my water (yeah I am one of those sober DJs) and she was a real hot one and yay she started talking me up… about a minute and a half later… SILENCE… think I forgot something here… snatched the mic quickly, shouted something retarded and hit the next song in… thankfully the audience was drunk enough that the party continued, but man I was more red than the red light effect…

One night I got way to drunk nearing the end of the night and accidentally tripped over a cable on the floor and knocked my laptop witch went flying down on the dance floor 🙁 so the night ended 5 minutes earlier then planed but luckily it was a slow night and people did not mind.

Jeez, laughed my ass off reading this. But a nice way how the crowd (and the management) handled it. Faith in humanity restored (to quote the Chive 😉 )

I think hitting the eject button on the wrong CDJ three times in one night was pretty bad.

Actually probably the worse was playing a gig at a massive festival after party… It was my first time using an S4 (the previous DJ was using it and I told him just to leave it and I’ll play off that as opposed to the CDJs) I spent the first 20-30 mins of my set one level off on the EQs… So I was using the highs as gains, mids as highs, lows as mids and the filter as the bass (I think that all makes sense)… Now this place has a terrible sound system and I was a little bit bent so it was kind of understandable…. However having it pointed out to me by Diplo & the guys from Magnetic Man took a while to live down.

wow yeah thats pretty brutal. reading all these stories makes me not want to drink while im on the clock or about to clock in for a dj set. I just got done listening to afrojacks set from ultra music festival, and after introducing himself with his voice gone and saying how hard he partied that week, he proceeded to train wreck the first twenty minutes of his set until lil jon came in to save his ass. he couldnt even get his beatmatching down and was playing the tracks he was cueing up at full volume! lol.

im sure thats everybodys plan (to not drink on the job) but i think the peer pressure eventually gets to everybody, especially when they get comftorable with their mixing. im sure being in the drinking/clubbing atmosphere adds to the pressure as well. but ill do my best not too and keep in mind that I have a responsibility to the people and everybody involved to maintain my composure during a set.

One of my bigger gigs opening for a special guest could have gone horribly wrong. I was using my new S4 and about an hour in after a good opening, it started to sputter, literally like it was running out of gas, I was freaking out, the new dj was due in half an hour as he was performing for a private party. I had my ipod handy, so I quickly chuck that into the spare channel and away I go with my recent mix I had recorded. It fit the mood and I have to admit I was going all SHM up there fiddling with the knobs trying to make it look like I was mixing. Anyway, I had my backup RMX, so as the booth was up high, in a lull I swapped the S4 for the RMX and tried to mix back in.

Then, the new DJ comes and he brings his turntables with him, so of course this is a small booth which is a ski gondola originally, fits only two people at best. In order to set his stuff up, I had to unplug all of my stuff. So what do I do.. oh shit thats right, I have an ipod already hooked up, the management hopefully had no clue I had screwed up before and used the ipod for 15 mins, so I came up with the brilliant idea of using it now. At this moment, with the switch going on, I hid in the back of the booth just doing the vol up and down to mix in the new track as its an old ipod. It might have sounded alright, but damnit I was embarrassed and happy to get away once the new DJ took over. Turned out as I was leaving everyone I passed had good things to say, but it just shows to be prepared for anything..

I felt like a waiter up there going into the kitchen and swearing blindly and then coming back through the doors and smiling to the crowd like everything is peachy keen.

I once had a venue in a formerly industrial used building which had been transformed into a loft.
300 folks around, party smashing like hell, when suddenly a beautiful girl in a green leather jacket stood in front of me and said: Volume down or party’s over!

Well. Problem was: she was one of those:

Had to play the rest of the night with the bass completely turned off, since the loft owners had forgotten to inform the neighbourhood and stuff. Yea-ha.

    EDM with no bass.

    Need I say more?

Such embarrasing situation i had in the early ’80’s when i was playing in a Club (was mixing with vinyl).
I was making an very good transition in my set, in time with perfect alined beats.
Was very enthousiasic swinging on the vibe in the Dj booth and i accidently bumped one of the 2 turntables.
Result; my transition was trainwrecked and also the vinyl that was playing out on that turntable ,
had a big scratch on its surface. So it was not suiteble to play out anymore. Me and the other members of the Dj team & the audience could have a big laugh about that.

When you have gigs where you have to bring all your own equipement with you. (mobile disco)
    Be prepared for the worst…….

One time on such mobile disco gig (with a Dj Team) our DIY build mainamplifier was not functioning anymore, in the middle of this gig. Al the sound was stopped. A very stressfull & embarrasing situation, but we had brought a spare amplifier with us, so we could solve this in a few minutes. This situation occured also a long time after that on a other gig. This was caused by the lightorgan wired to one channel of the speaker output of our amplifier. We learned from that event, and made some adjustments on our DIY build lichtorgan to build an little amplifier in it, so the sound output runs from the rec output of the analog mixer.

So be prepared for almost everything, take all kinds of audiocables, a flashlight, and some small handtools, ducktape etc. with you.

I was once invited to play with a DJ friend of mine. One of the supports in the DJ booth was loose, and we where told not to put anything on it. A friend of mine came in the booth, I lay my glass on the loose table, it falls over, he tries to catch my glass but the support fell, and the glass spills all over the floor, 15cm away from the amplifier. Almost killed the sound system…

My DJ friend was mad at me, OMG how embarassing that was… he litterally told us to “get the f.. out” the booth…

Since I’ve learned something. Nobody, not even your closest friend, in the Dj booth 🙂

Love to hear those stories from of the dark ages. In the early eighties i was still pooping my diapers, but i remember stuff i’d seen two or three years later on public fairs in the village i grew up in. It seemed very common for mobile dj businesses to play out on home-built gear back then. I remember big wooden consoles (up to 2 metres wide) with mixers and turntables built in. Don’t ask me how they’d manage to move that (by today’s standards) unnecessarily heavy stuff every weekend.
