There is no standard, that’s the issue. We look for 0.01% as our “holy grail” for manual beatmatching too, and where a controller is pro enough for this to be an issue, we state it in our reviews. HID is a red herring though – there are no HID controllers with excellent resolution (many Serato controllers, for instance). Best off testing/asking on a controller-by-controller basis, regardless of protocol.

did you try it on 6%… I have a reloop jockey 2 working in vdj, the fader is 14bit and only about 3 inches long but the resolution is 0.01 at 6%… maybe also look at the reloop terminal 4 when it gets released as the fader is fairly large with large jogs. It should be a pretty good unit to learn on if the push to kill eq knobs feel good to use.

resolution of controls is not just the hardware… there are settings in software to determine this.
I know traktor has the settings for a controls resolution, as I use it, but as for other software I don’t know.

Thanks for all your replies. Yes I tried at 6% as well, which then was 0.03, and at 4% 0.02. A while ago, I tried in the same shop the reloop disk jockey 3, and it was about the same thing. It was hooked up to the same computer, so maybe their Traktor is not set up properly? I also tried to fiddle with Traktor’s controller manager settings, but I couldn’t find it. I remember from my older controller as well that there is a setting specifying the range (then it was 0-127). I’ll give another shop a try next weekend.

    Cheers,

looks like traktor is the problem then, also 14 bit midi sends 256 Control Change messages, not 128, it seems that traktor has not implimented the 14bit midi the controllers offer. VDJ ftw! :p

Sorry for the confusion: my old controller had 128 steps, I just couldn’t find the entry in Traktor when I tried the 4trak… But it must have been better than that as at 8%, my old controller did like 0.16 increments. Anyway…

Reloop is claiming its new controllers (Terminal Mix 2 & 4) have better pitch controls, but we haven’t tested that yet.

IIRC, the Numark Serato controllers, (V7, NS7/6, etc) have stupidly sensitive pitch faders, with probably the nicest fader body/cap in existence (even better than CDJ faders). I remember wondering why I had so many 127.93 tunes, when I realized my fader was a miniscule amount off centre.

Unfortunately, the S4 faders are horrendous abominations of hardware, with weird caps and a ton of sticktion (gets “sticky” when it stops moving). So the Trakor options are somewhat limited.

Looking forward to hear from / test the Terminal 4. Also the Vestax VCI 380 is coming out end of this month in the UK – I guess I better wait…
