    Congrats,

    It all depends on who is there if you have young girls who are jamming out to the Top 40…keep ’em happy.
    I just started my residency last week and all the bedroom DJing in the world prepares you little for reading a crowd, so that it what I am working on improving now.

    You’ll need to provide a little more information if you want people to help you out. It totally depends on the venue, the people walking through the door, the music format, and a whole slew of other things…

    In general, do a little recon so you know the place inside and out before your first shift. Get a sense of what is played and how the crowd responds to it, and then base what you do on that.

    sorry guys it was bit vague. The music format is minimal,tech,house and electro. This is completely different to all the other nightclubs in the area which all play the same top40.

    so i guess most of it would be educating and than if they get grooving, play them again next week ?

    Ya, that would sound about right then. But also keep a good collection of top40-ish crossover tracks on the ready as bar managers are notorious for bailing on a format if it isn’t working right away and the club down the street looks busier. With some good crossover tracks on hand and sprinkled throughout the night, you can salvage an uncooperative crowd, not stray too far from the format you are aiming for, and probably make yourself look like a rockstar to the management.

    But again, it is all very venue specific – so just be prepared to improvise a little if needed.

    I agree with Todd Oddity!
    I literally have a folder on my Serato set called “songs people like” and if things are starting to wane I just grab a couple from that and BAM! problem solved.

    Usually I’ll do 2-me 1-them and try to read what they’re into-could be top 40, jackin house, balaeric beats, who knows. You just have to find that lovely medium between being you and feeding them 😀

    one lil tip that was handed down to me many moons ago went something like this, “find a few smokin hot girls on the dancefloor, keep their asses dancing all night, and then you know you’ve done your job.. if you loose ’em, you gotta start all over again” and thats sorta how i operate today (some 10-12 years later)
