KeymasterI use the AV40 in the DDJT office because space is really limited. They have multiple inputs which is really useful (2 x TRS, 2 x phono plus an 1/8″ stereo on the front) but it’s good to have wedges to point them up at you. They’re bloody good desktop speakers, but not really up for use as studio monitors. I use them for mix practice with no problems at all.

MemberFor DJing you can get away with hi-fi which will be cheaper but if you plan to do music production you must have monitors. I use Adam A7s for production and some Mackie Tapco S5s for DJing.

MemberThanks guys.
No plans for music production by now. Think I’m going with the AV40, seems to be the best value for the price.Phil, besides practicing, are they good for music listening in general?
Cheers

KeymasterYes, I like things that have multiple uses! They’re great computer / multimedia speakers, they are good for mix practice, and good for general music too. The main thing is flexibility and size – I needed desktop speakers above all that I could use with all types of inputs without continually plugging in and unplugging them.

MemberI currently use KRK Rokit 6’s for my DJ setup and looking into either Genelecs, KRK VXT6’s or Adams A7x’s for my studio set up. The KRK is great bang for buck.

MemberI use Rockit 5’s for monitoring. They aren’t rubbish, and as Liambo said, hard to beat at the price. Also have plenty of input options (RCA, TRS, XLR) – but they might be a bit transparent for general listening purposes.

Are they? I personally think the 6’s are ok for general listening.. They are not the best but quite good compared to other ones, for example i thought the Mackie MR5’s were too bass heavy. But as i said and ellieff said, bang for buck is brilliant.

MemberI really need some decent speakers. Right now I’m rockin some pos “creAtive” pc speakers. I’d like to get some krks but 150 a box is too expensive for me. I figure if I actually start bringing in some money from this I’ll invest in speakers.

I’d expect the 8’s to be even better again – but it wasn’t until I played some old records while people were hanging out that I realised how badly recorded most rock music is/was. I’m pretty sure it’s because the KRK’s expose all the deficiencies by having a reasonably flat response.
Personal preference – and I’m in the enviable position of being able to have separate sets of speakers/amps for monitoring / general listening / playing really loud 😀

This. I have RP5s and they’re great, I also have a set of Acoustic Energy AE22 passive monitors which are more accurate, but the KRKs are better imo for general listening.

MemberI found the KRK6’s lacked the low bottom end. Great punch through the mid range but my dnb sounded a little bit like dn_.
Personally I’d go for something with a decent sub for practicing djing. Look out for the frequency ranges on the specs. Ideally you want something that can go down to 30Hz or lower, 35 should suffuce though.
I currently use a Hi-Fi system; Mission speakers, mordaunt short sub & rotel amp. While its a bit tonally unbalanced, it still sounds awesome and the bass boost button fills the air around me with sub bass 😀
and all for less than a pair of RP6’s!

MemberKRK do make the 10S subwoofer to complement the rokits, which apparently is beastly.

True, but my point is cost. Not many people have the best part of £900 laying about for a full range home monitoring setup. Least of all young aspiring bedroom dj’s probably still in education.
The spec on that £300 sub doesnt look all that different to mine that cost half the price. Have you seen the 12sH2O too? £1200!? You could buy a gig rig for that!
My point being that its all brand your paying for. the KRKs are good speakers that look nice, but so are many hifi speakers that can be picked up on the cheap second hand.

ParticipantI’m surprised nobody mentioned the BX5a’s for less than $200 you can’t beat em!

MemberI use KRK 6″ and are very happy with them. I don’t have a sub but have heard them plat with the 10S sub and it sounds awesome….maybe when I get the cash. If price is an issue though have a look at the Yamaha HSM50 an awesome near field monitor for the price.
