I’ve borrowed a pair for a gig once, just after my mate had bought them and was hyping them to me. (I’ve unashamedly ripped into beats products in the past, and continue to do so). The pros are solid headphones, far better built than their relatives, the solos and the studios, and they sound is far less muddy as well. The swivel feature in the cups is a nice touch if you like that sort of thing, but it really did nothing for me, I’m used to just slipping a cup of one ear and sitting behind. The downsides: The price. Still hideously expensive in comparison to other DJ/general listening headphones. Sonically and build wise there are better headphones for the price. The Sound. This is more subjective, but they retain the signature beats V shaped frequency response. It can be good or bad. For me it was bad, because I like my headphones to be good for genres other than rap/hiphop and EDM. The comfort. When you first put them on, they don’t feel that bad. An hour later it feels like a unicorn is balanced on your skull on its horn. These things are heavy, and they are very tight. After trying them, I would still recommend the Shure SRH840’s or SRH750DJ’s as full sized headphones for DJing. Far more comfortable, similar sound quality, and they are built like tanks. I’m not a fan of the HD 25’s either, I think they’re uncomfortable and a bit to sibilant. Edit: Forum won’t let me edit it so it’s not a wall of text. Sorry about that.

Me personally, I own a few of the Beats headphones (Solo HD, Pro and Studio). However, if you’re going for casual listening in addition to DJ, you can get a better pair for a fraction of the price.

The selling point behind the Beats IMO is the label (don’t get me wrong, they are good), but they do have their gripes. Solos fall apart too easily (I know this from casual listening), the Studios aren’t too bad (but once again, you can get better for cheaper), Pros….comfort is a HUGE issue to me…they do well to isolate sound, and generally do have a good sound, but at the expense of basically crushing your head and ears due to it’s construction; metal is not so pliable, lol. The swivel actually annoys me, due to the metal construction, it’s actually quite tough to get it to swivel without feeling like you’re gonna yank em off your head. Like the above user said, they are tight around your head, and in a DJ setting where you don’t feel like using the swivel of each cup, and prefer to have em around your neck to bring them up to cue something in, you will start to feel it sooner rather than later, and that’s a deal breaker for me.

The day I got my S4, I picked up some Aerial 7 Mondrian Tanks (from Guitar Center, for about 90 bucks), and they strike a good blend of casual/DJ listening IMO. They have different attachments so that they can be used with any device that supports track seeking from the push button/mic attachment, it also comes with a 1/4 inch extension cable that actually screws into the 3.5mm input, for DJing purposes. each individual ear cup also swivels around, so that you could leave both ear cups on your head if you felt like it. Sound could be better, but for the price, I wasn’t complaining. Color might not get you taken too seriously, but hey, you gotta stand out right?

All in all, you get the picture; if you can find better for less, go for it, at the end of the day it’s just a label.

Like I said, color might not get you taken too seriously, but they’re insanely comfortable to me. ^_^
Sorry for the wall of text..kinda went off the track there…

Thank you both for your responses and recommendations! This is exactly the kind of feedback that I was hoping for. I wish there were a place where I could actually try out the different headsets. Its easy to walk into Best Buy where they have a display set up for the Beats and hear how good they sound, but it’s not so easy to find a place that will let you try the others. I ended up going with the Senn’s based on all the glowing recommendations for them I saw in another forum, but headphones are such a subjective product, they really need to be tried before being bought. Also, I live in Canada and there’s no Guitar Center here.

It sounds like to me you want a pair of headphones which are over the ear not on the ear like the HD-25 and the Beats Pro.

I have been using the Pioneer HDJ2000 for about a year and a 1/2 now and i love them. SUPER comfortable and can listen to them for hours, solid construction swivel joints are a magnesium alloy. There have been reports of the headband breaking but i havent had that issue what so ever. The sound quality is also very good. I Find the headphones do not color the sound at all which is optimal for Producing and DJing, I dont use these for every day listening because i prefer In-ear monitors for every day use.

The only downside to these headphones is the Weight, they are on the heavier side for headphones.

Hee Won, I think you’re right, I find that HD-25s are uncomfortable because they are on ear, but no so for the Beats, I find them extremely comfortable, but I’ve only tried them for a few minutes at most. Thanks for the recommendation of the HDJ2000. They look a really nice set.
