MemberBuy a controller, if you are beggining., I would reccomend the Mixtrack Pro, great price, great performace. You could buy something better if you have the money, of course the gear you buy will be more proffesional. But if you are starting, mixtrack pro would do great things for you, and will get you started amazingly, after you learn, buy your CDJs.

ParticipantTake a look at the controller review on the blog, it will help you make up your mind. If money is an issue then it has to be the mixtrack pro. It gets 5 stars in the review and it’s a well loved machine that was the starting point for many dj’s. It’s reasonably cheap and it won’t break the bank if you decide djing is not for you. If you don’t mind not having jogs and can double your outlay, I think the twitch is a lovely piece of kit plus you don’t need to buy software because it’s free. At the top end I love my denon mc6000. If there’s a dj shop near you why not go and test them? Good luck with your choice, I know it’s a tough decision which took me over a year.

MemberI would get a nice laptop to start DJ’ing with (maybe get a dual boot just for DJ’ing). Also get a nice controller (check some reviews) and just start practising on your favorite program. (Please: Use Traktor or Serato, don’t use VDJ when you are going to DJ on a party)

MemberCDJ are expensive in my opinion. A good for the buck is a controller. so, you could get one… as stated above a mixtrack/ mixtrack pro is the cheapest way to go.. laptop wise any laptop will do as long as you dont abuse it load what you need ONY – DJ software!

MemberRight, thanks for the help guys! You’ve helped me make my mind up. For now, I’m gonna get the coming exams out the way, then I’ll just get a Mixtrack Pro. What software should I get though? Traktor Duo? Pro? Serato? (money is a factor again haha)

Participanti say the denon mc6000.expensive but quality.i use serato with traktor pro 2.with the denon you can mix both software and turntables etc.something to bear in mind if your laptop suddenly combusts.lol

MemberTraktor LE 2 is pretty good for starters.. nothing fancy and all. But, if you want a really good software traktor pro is always the best with all the effects and etc. But if budget does not allow it.. Duo still is a good viable option..

There are expensive CDJs as there are expencive controllers!
You can not compare Pio CDJ2000 pro gear to a Mixtrak pro bedroom gear!
There are begginers CDJs that are not that expencive the same way that there are cheap controllers!
A mixtrak Pro can be compared to a cheap all in one unit CDJ from Numark that costs about the same in my country.
So that is IMO not true!I have counted and came to the conclution that if you will get pro DJ gear it costs about the same:
Controller: Macbook Pro, NI Traktor Pro, Denopn MC6000 Denon HP1000.
CDJ: 2xDenon S3700 Denon X1600 Denon HP1000
Do the math and you will see what I mean!My suggestion is still to start off with a Mixtrak Pro if you own a laptop
That would be a good start and after that you can either stick with the Mixtrak, get a better controller or get CDJs.//DJ Hessler

MemberI already have a Macbook Pro, so I won’t be buying that. It’s old but it’ll do for another year at least.
But yeah, I’ll go with you guys and just buy a Mixtrack Pro, thanks 🙂
I know the Mixtrack Pro comes with Virtual DJ LE, but the proper professional progams to practise for are Serato and Traktor aren’t they? Should I just go ahead and buy the Mixtrack, keep going with VDJ and buy Traktor later or what?
Also, when I do get it, I’d want to record weekly mixes for mixcloud or something, and I’ve had past issues recording “stereo mix” on a mac (i. e. you can’t record audio that’s playing within the computer) which have really annoyed me. Is there a way around this with the mixtrack Pro?

MemberIf you get the Mixtrack Pro (not the regular Mixtrack) you’ll also be able to download Serato Intro for free and use that.
If you end up getting Traktor Pro then it has recording built in.

MemberOh nice! I didn’t know that.
And if I use Serato… how’ll I record? Are the any ways around it? I know about Soundflower but I’ve never tried it myself.
January 2, 2012 at 11:23 am #12239Lew
MemberI think the easiest way to record with Intro on a Mac would be to just use an external recorder of some sort. If you went that route you’d need to use RCA splitters on the outputs of the Mixtrack Pro so that you could still feed your speakers as well as the recording device, unless whatever you use to record can output the signal it’s recording.
I don’t think Soundflower would work as you need to be able to select it as the output device in your mixing software and Intro doesn’t let you choose the audio device.
BTW, as you appear to be in the UK going by the prices in your OP, the Mixtrack Pro should come with Traktor LE rather than VDJ LE.

MemberWhen I started, I bought the Numark Total Control. In combination with a 5.1 Soundcard and Traktor 3, it offered me much insights into how DJ-Software works and how to map MIDI and all that stuff.
If you know you might possibly need some time to get going, why not buy a cheap controller, or a used one, or just an old one, to learn about all the possibilites you have and to kind of narrow down what you need or want, and invest a bigger amount of money once you can nail your requirements?Would rid you off the frustration and the thoughts like “man, I spent XXX friggin $ for this piece of S§§§ WHY IS IT NOT WORKING!!!!!!!!”
Aight?

MemberBang for Buck: Would you say these two are the best:
Denon MC6000
Numark Mixtrack Pro?

MemberDenon. I bought that unit recently and still freeze in awe about what a well made unit it is. Total recommendation.
10* of 5 😉 (though, I gotta admit, I didn’t test the Mixtrack, but I think the heavy metal jacket of the Denon will appeal to you as well). -
