Meh, I don’t really use dedicated harmonic mixing. When I listen to new songs, the first thought that goes through my mind is the songs that the new one would go well with. That sticks, and carries through to my mixes.

    100% honesty now?
    Sometimes.
Like above, i hear a tune and think, yeah, that will go with this this and this… and 9 times out of 10 i’m right
But sometimes, if im playing on the fly, ill type in to search parameters tunes within + or – 6 or so BPM, then arrange them in order of Camelot system key, and look one up one down and the same, then from that list ill select a tune i KNOW will go next seamlessly – NOT just pick one blind just because its Key & BPM matched…

So in that respect i use it more of an Aide Memoire

I transcribe my songs by ear, so I know the keys are right. The first consideration is always feel though, then key. I have my tracks notated with key signature and intensity. Sometimes I’ll have to rough through a transition out of key or find a cool trick, but its more important that the feels are moving where you want them to.

Sometimes its a good idea sometimes, it aint.. Seems harmonic mixing you are actually not thinking too much out of the box… in other words playing it safe… It sometimes a good idea sometimes it aint…

Well I only use Harmonic mixing when I have some songs left in my playlist, but I really don’t know where to fit them in. But I must say that most of my “best-mixing-combo’s” exist out of songs that aren’t even close in the Harmonic Wheel. Just keep practising and most of the time you will hear songs that will fit together 😉

(For example: I recently discovered BjornBerg, he sounds a bit like Avicii, so I most of the time mix him up with that)

I voted very often – most of the times but I need to clarify….I use my ears and not a key-detection software. I can easily spot clashing keys of tracks by ear and I always get disgustes if two tracks in mix are “out of tune”. In that sense, I use harmonic mixing but i dont follow any “rules” or “wheels” as these are imposed by various “in key” programs. Just by ear!

It’s just another tool among many… if you mix harmonically alone, you mis out on so much else about DJing. But it’s GREAT to have it in your arsenal, especially for impromptu mashups.
