If you do not have a scene then start one.

You need to make a pilgrimage (so I called it) to all the clubs and bars and get spots to play that music that you want to introduce. Make a facebook page and get people to follow you to every gig.

When I founded my DJ company (still a world without facebook, we used mailing lists…) we started with 10 followers. When I quit the company 5 years later we had 400+ (larger grey area since we do not know how the emails were distributed) our own merchandising webshop etc. and we could easily get well payed gigs in any club since they knew we would fill it up…

But it takes time, patience and a lot of promotion on your side. Also keep your followers close and be available for them is the key. Make them feel special (we started by making them special T-Shirts they payed for them of course but they could only get them from a DJ of the company, so there were officially “in the crew”)…

    My advice:

    1. Look for like-minded people who want what you want.
    2. Enlist some of the ambitious ones to help you, but the rest you maintain as fans/followers
    3. Throw small events solely for them. Don’t do them too often so you garner bigger results
    4. Make your events a halfway spot between what your scene currently is, and what you would like it to be. That means playing the rap/hip-hop/pop, but also the dance music
    5. Put some effort into the events so they come off as special.
    6. Be patient and let things grow.
    7. Learn from failures, try again, and do better if you fail.
    8. Seek non-event areas of dance and cross promote. Maybe it’s the local college radio or podcast that will help push your events.

Be sure to read the series on throwing/promoting events. I’ll soon have new articles up on making promotional materials.

Wow guys thanks a lot that is really helpful. I can’t wait to get back to the states and get going. I’m currently in Romania for work. Either of you ever had the chance to get over this way? Any good clubs, or festivals or DJs I should be looking for?

Only time I was in Romania I was DJing on a festival and that was in the supposedly Keep of Count Dracula… (which is a tourist hoax of course, since the real keep of Vlad Tepesh has been levelled to the ground.)
But the people were really nice and welcoming throughout.
