LOL … I’ll play whatever I think will work. Especially at a charity gig. Those things are like weddings. Everybody is there with a single shared purpose. At a wedding that’s the bride and groom, at a charity it’s the good cause. Never the music 🙂
In both cases, extremely broad audience, no set direction to take. Gotta play it by ear, be ready to try stuff out, see how the crowd reacts and follow-up accordingly.
Might want to check out the top 40 (dance) charts of the period since you worked at Virgin. Skip listen the tracks (on iTunes for example) and just pick up the ones that make you go “oh yeah, this one was big”. You’ll end up with plenty of tracks to get you through the night. Add some good ole floor filling classics and perhaps some modern-day “sing-along” kind of tracks and you’ll be the hero of the night.
Extra tip: if people don’t come for the party/music specifically (like your typical club/festival crowd), keep the volume decent. Don’t go full force, it can quickly kill the night, even if you play all the right tracks, imho.
You’ll be their hero and you can rest easy knowing you have contributed to a worthy cause.
Good luck & greetinx.
