It is good etiquette to do so, not a courtesy. It shows people that you do not just post up a mix because you can, but you take at least some time to do stuff right.

Some people choose not to add a tracklist, because they like to add some tension if you will to the mix as the listener does not knows what tracks are played.  I personally always add a tracklist. Because I want people to know what tracks I used in the mix. These days there are so many mixes to be found online. When someone sees my mix online and they like the artists or tracks I used. Or they recognise some artist and they may get curious of the mix because of that.

And also it looks good. I also always add artwork to my mixes. That can be something really simple but I think that is good marketing. Try to make your mix stand out. Even before listening.

Seems to me that more & more sets posted on Soundcloud etc do not come with tracklists from the DJ.

I can understand the “mystery” element & there’s plenty of guys out there who thrive on searching + providing ID’s of tracks, however we’re all in the same boat in terms of a love of music & it secondly doesn’t help the artists of the music used if the DJ doesn’t give support IMO.

As & when I feel ready to post a mix, I’ll certainly be offering up the tracklist.

If the tracks in are not yours you should provide a track list to support the producer of the track. Plus, many of the mix hosting sites allow users to search for mixes based on artists. Having you mixes track listed – especially on sites like mixcloud.com can bring your mix more plays

Not required, but I’ve been doing them since the early 90s.  I mainly hate when I get a mix and then have to run it round the stores asking “what is this?”

I’ve seen some who claim they don’t want other DJs “stealing their playlists”, but I respond that if they need to hide what they play then it shows they don’t have anything unique to offer that sets them apart from other DJs.

In the long run, more exposure for the artists means they make more money in sales, and this equates to them producing more music you like…as opposed to quitting and leaving behind a plethora of mediocre and bad producers who make crap.

The first couple I put up on Soundcloud I added a full track list as I felt that was the right thing to do – credit the guys that made the music.  The second mix got taken down at the request of skint records though….I am sure track lists are not what gets things taken down but there are people that do think that they are,  so I don’t put track lists up anymore for soundcloud.

Selfish, yes.  Pointless…maybe, but I was pretty annoyed when my mix was taken down after hundreds of plays and lots of good feedback.
