ModeratorIf budget isn’t an issue: get a new Mac (be sure to get one with an SSD instead of or in addition to a hard disk).
If budget is somewhat of issue: get a resonably young used Mac. Have it upgraded with an SSD 😀
If budget is a serious issue. Just get a windows laptop.
There are plenty of threads on here, including some by me, that give a summary of reasons a Mac has advantages over a windows laptop in the DJ scene. I am not a big Mac fan and I always use windows laptops and desktops for serious work, but i make an exception for DJ-ing (any music-related activity really, like sound recording too).
So, not a hardcore Mac-afficionado trying to help the heirs of Steve Jobs get a better income.

KeymasterFor Music and DJing? Mac.
<p style=”margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; line-height: 1.6; font-family: arial, Geneva, Tahoma, sans-serif; background-color: #f7f7f7;”>Ah, the Mac vs PC question. As we teach at the start of How To Digital DJ Fast, many DJs choose Macs because they just want something to do the job needed to be done by a computer in a digital DJ set-up, something that does it with the minimum of fuss. Macs fit the bill, because OS X is often felt to be an easier operating system to use that Windows for non-expert users.</p>
<p style=”margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; line-height: 1.6; font-family: arial, Geneva, Tahoma, sans-serif; background-color: #f7f7f7;”>With a Mac you are guaranteed a high standard of construction, and they have universal audio drivers so you don’t need to mess around installing ASIO drivers to get your computer’s sound card to work with them, as you have to for some hardware when using it with a PC. Macs are also pretty much free of computer viruses, unlike Windows.</p>
<p style=”margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; line-height: 1.6; font-family: arial, Geneva, Tahoma, sans-serif; background-color: #f7f7f7;”>Having said that, Macs generally cost more than similarly specified PCs, and as you say they are not to everyone’s taste.</p>
<p style=”margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; line-height: 1.6; font-family: arial, Geneva, Tahoma, sans-serif; background-color: #f7f7f7;”></p>
<p style=”margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; line-height: 1.6; font-family: arial, Geneva, Tahoma, sans-serif; background-color: #f7f7f7;”>If you prefer using Windows, can’t afford a Mac, and choose carefully, there’s absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t DJ with a PC – and many DJs do exactly that. After all, the actual components inside are often identical.</p>
<p style=”margin: 10px 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; line-height: 1.6; font-family: arial, Geneva, Tahoma, sans-serif; background-color: #f7f7f7;”>The bottom line is that DJs want absolute reliability, because their performances are mission-critical and they don’t want the computer part of the equation to let them down. In my view, that’s why those who can afford it tend to end up using Macs. But it’s by no means necessary to do so.</p>

ParticipantI’d only tell you to get Windows if you’re prepared to spend the same money you would spend on a Mac.
In my book, you’ll always have problems with ANY $200-$500 laptop.
I’ve used Windows and prefer it…but I only use high-end laptops because they will have solid hardware and a clean operating system. Â The Macbooks are the same thing, outside of the overheating problems.
Too many have Windows problems because they buy cheap crappy laptops.

ModeratorNot everyone I think. Fact is you’ll need to do more (OS) tweaking to get a windows PC right for DJ-ing than you do Mac. And a simple thing like rhe magnetic power connector has saved my hide on a few occassions yet and I love the backlit keys in a dark booth (used a usb led lamp in my pc before that)

ParticipantI was a Windows head for more then 20 years. Recorded mixed and released 5 CD’s using only Windows computers.
3 years ago I switched to Mac and there is no way I will ever go back to using a windows computer again.
A high spec Windows computer can be used after some tweaks (right drivers) a mac can be used out of the box.
