I completely feel your pain Chris. It’s a wonderful thing yet greatly frustrating at the same time to have all this music on hand. There are days where I search all day to keep up to date with music and then that night a friend will show me all these great songs i haven’t heard yet. It feels overwhelming as though we will never be able to keep up. Create hold bins on beat port and wishlists on iTunes to save music you are interested in. Additionally, to boil down options, its easier if your mixing focuses on a specific genre. Mine sure doesn’t though.

Chris, I hear where you are coming from. It seems like everyday there is 150 songs I want to go and download. But here is my opinion. While it is always important to stay up to date in the music world, there is something more important. Having the people you are playing for enjoy the music. Sure, if you are the first DJ at a club to play a certain song that is awesome. But the ultimate goal of a DJ, at any level, is to entertain and make people dance. So, what I am trying to get at is, don’t worry so much about being as updated as possible. Instead, focus on having the best songs and the songs people enjoy the most. In the end, that is what people will dance to most. Not the song they never heard, but the song that makes them go “oh shit” when it’s played. That is just my opinion!

    The thing is wonderful actually.

You have to take this the other way around. My take on this is:

In the past (long time ago) I had 2 record shops in my hometown I visited every Monday (when shippings arrived) and I had to pay loads of money for vinyls where some of them were “so so” just to have enough new stuff for the crowd.

Now today I can browse through iTunes, beatport, hear internet radio etc. all day and fill my wishlist for the month. And at the end of the month I can go buy 10 songs for 99cents each and each and every one of those tracks is stunningly wonderful. And I do not consider those I did not buy “waste”, they just did not fit in. There are some amazing tracks I did not buy and I love to hear them on the radio, but I just do not need so many tracks in my collection… things are still wonderful without owning each track I think is kinda good…
