ddj-sx got stolen, need something to hold me over

Not an easy question to answer.

Personally I think the difference in price between the SX and any serious alternative isn’t gonna be so big that it will make the difference. If you want portability and absolute build quality for the road, the MC6000 MkII from Denon is versatile and about 2/3 of the price of an SX (at least here). It already had the video support for VDJ, but now it’s Serato approved I am guessing it will do Serato video too. It’s the proverbial tank, will fit easily in a 19″ flightcase and with the new version the layout is slightly less cluttered and more logical (most users biggest gripe with it in mkI).

For the road I would never go back to TTs and a mixer, especially if you want to do timecode. Too much to hookup, carry, etx. And yes there is needles and all that stuff to worry about and keep spares for.

If you are comfortable with the SX and it’s not really lacking any major features that you expect to come out in future products, I would probably try to go for another SX. Perhaps you can get a used one?

Man, sorry to hear about your loss…..

I am in a similar boat right now, I have a Serato controller, but it’s not up to par for gigs.   I would like to stick to Serato, actually I’d like to upgrade from Intro to Serato DJ.  I have been looking into the Denon MC2000 for it’s size, but it’s an Intro controller and doesn’t appear to be set up for taking advantage of the full software.   I will now be looking into the 6000Mk2, the DDJ-SR, and the Vestax VCI-380.   I am hoping to find something with loud, high quality output, and to make good use of the full Serato software.   Also, I am concerned with cue volume, as my current controller is almost unusable when the PA is rockin’ loud.  I will be following this thread to see what other input is given, and also in hopes that the OP lets us know what he ended up deciding to go with, and how it’s working out.      Moonshadow

There are some controllers that are a little weak actually. The Novation Twitch is the most prominent… you have a hard time to get to 0 db with it…

Biased suggestion here: The Vestax VCI-300 is probably half that price used right now. Even the upgrade, the VCI-380 is probably only around $400 now. As for midi platters w/o drive motors, it’s tough to beat Vestax’s I used the 380… the pads and relatively compact size make it a great 2 channel midi mixer that has a built-in standalone mixer. Just in case you want to use it in a DVS setup as well.

Thanks for the input folks, my main issue is with my Mixtrack Pro 2, when the PA is loud, the cue volume on full is just not near loud enough….  not nearly as loud as the cue on my analog mixer….   also, the master out isn’t that loud either… so I usually run it into the analog mixer, then adjust gain to get near 0 dB….   otherwise I have to work my amp much harder running just the MTP2 into the amp….   I’ll be starting a thread soon, so I’ll stop cluttering this thread up with my ramblings…. but thanks to all for input, and I’ll be following this one still to see what the OP ended up deciding on…

Right now I am using some cheap phones from the record shop, JVC I think….   they don’t isolate well, and I know even cheap “DJ” headphones will be much better…. However, these headphones are quite loud even on my iPod, and can get WAY TOO LOUD hooked into my Stanton analog mixer…. I have also tried a couple other sets of phones on the MTP2 and it’s just not loud at all….  I have a workaround for now, until my new controller arrives I will be running the MTP2 into the right side of my mixer, and the cue output into the left side of the mixer, I can then use the mixer to “amplify” it and use the mixer cue out to plug my phones into… I have the appropriate cabling and will be giving it a go at a house party Sat…..   I can make do for now….

Look for my “gear list” thread in the forum soon…. I hope to be ordering by next Friday…. just a couple more little hoops to navigate…LOL
