when you say “hit a brick wall” what do you mean…can you add some more context?

Do you feel you know the basics, but can’t take the next step – what can you do well and what do you think you need to learn more?

I use the mixtrack pro II and love it.

And welcome – I am new here too as are many since the forum has been upgraded.

I love it here too! 🙂

Thanks for the reply, not sure how to add much context to this. Basically I bought the controller 3 weeks ago and ever since just taught myself by trial and error. I think I can beat match two songs and ‘sometimes’ mix them in, but when it comes to knowing when and how to correctly use all of the effects is confusing me!

my personal advice is don;t worry about effects until you have mastered all of the basics.  i still rarely use any of them…… only in certain situations.  In fact in the 3 mixes I have ulpoaded to Soundcloud I think I used effects in one song and ran a loop in one….

How long have you been dj’ing for? did you take any lessons or just learn by your own trial and error?

Pretty soon to be running into a brick wall (or feeling that way).

You say you think you can beatmatch and occasionally mix something in. You’ll need to get to the point where you have to KNOW you beatmatch correctly (wether or not it is software supported is not that relevant, although many -including me- consider manual beatmatching a very worthwhile skill to possess).

The main thing is practice. The how-to guide (the free one) is a nice place to start and get some ticks and trips that might get you/keep you inpired. Of course the Digital DJ course will keep you busy and moving forward at a smart clip. There is a recent entry on the blog on “how to get the most out of your practice”, be sure to read it.

Finally, keep smiling and enjoying the practice. Don’t make it a competition with yourself and don’t expect mastering the skills to happen overnight (and three weeks in a DJ’s life IS overnight).

    Greetinx,

    Chuck
