ParticipantI will say Mac because I use it the next will say WIndows because it’s what he uses. What do you need it to do? only use it for DJ’ing? want to play all the newest 3d shooters?
If you just want it for DJ Mac and Windows will do the job. But the windows one might need lots of cleaning up and optimising depending of blotware. If you plan to play newest and grates games you will need to get a Windos one because not all games make it to Mac.
If you want a laptop that is ready for DJ after instaling a DJ software and no more work you would be better of getting a macOctober 23, 2012 at 7:18 am #30588Terry_42
KeymasterI only use Macs.
It is not that I do not like Windows, I am not one of those haters…. but it is long years of experience.
Whenever I saw a DJ at an event having a breakdown on stage, it was a Windows Laptop crashing.
Whenever we had problems in the studio with latency it was because of some windows driver in some PC or windows laptop. Now I am quite sure this is not due to Windows, but the simple fact that most Windows machines for consumers are poorly built quality and that you can get at certain prices Windows laptops that have better quality and wont make such problems. But I do not care to research this matter.
Hence I use Macs. The hold up to stage live, they have awesome built quality and you can just plug things in and they play, no driver hassle etc.
I have currently 2 MacBook Pros, both 15” as I like the screensize to scroll through my library. One is I think from 2008 or 2007, which is my main laptop I use for DJing and it has never let me down. Even though it has been in roadcases, bags, banged around, had at least 4 major OS upgrades, some keys are really stained and some part from the bottom aluminium is chipped off and hence it has a whole sticker galore on it to cover all the dings it has… it works flawlessly.
Of course I will now slowly transition to my new one and put this one in the “museum” with the Titanium Powerbook (from 2001, which also still works!) and the white MacBook from 2004.October 23, 2012 at 11:57 am #30606Stazbumpa
ParticipantMacs are supposed to be technically better and if you have that amount of cash to burn then fair play. However I have yet to see a Mac do anything a much cheaper windows lappy can do. It all depends if you feel that paying twice the price is worth what an hour or so of research online for windows configuration can do.
Personally I’m getting a reconditioned Dell machine for my next laptop. My last windows machine has lasted me 3 years of solid weekend gigging without issue.

MemberWow 3 years of use? Sorry, no offense, but my last MBP was still going strong after five years of MANY hours of daily usage, and I could still sell it for ~40% of what I paid for it new. I’m sure it would’ve lasted some more YEARS, it’s just that I wanted something new.
To each their own, but I don’t think they’re overpriced considering the better build quality, more stable OS (oh the hours I save per year compared to tweaking and fixing a Win system (I’ve been there long enough…)) and resale value. It’s like buying a Mercedes vs a Nissan/Kia what have you.
Edit: As I said, to each their own, my main point is that you DO NOT burn cash at all, because you get much better resale value too (hence the Mercedes comparison)

InactiveWe have this recycling system in our family where the oldest laptop ends up becoming the DJ laptop, mostly because if it breaks down or gets stolen, no big deal. And Traktor works fine with 4+ year old Mac laptops. Just make sure you max out the RAM.

ParticipantThis discussion reminds me of the debates between Nikon and Canon users on the photography messageboards I frequent or the Android versus Apple debates for cellphones.
In the end, it boils down to personal preference I guess.

My lappy was old news when I bought it and I can buy at least two much better quality Windows laptops than the one I got for the price of one bog standard Mac in any case, which should last me about 8 years in total of hardcore use. An 8 year old Mac’s resale value is largely due to its museum piece status. I’m not a windows fanboi, never really liked it if I’m honest, but tweaking a Win7 install takes a couple of hours tops and I just do not see the point in paying twice the price for something unless it does a particular task. Case in point, my mate went for a Mac but he uses it to write music and the prog he uses, Logic, only works Mac’s.
I agree that it’s down to personal preference, but I don’t buy people thinking they can do more than I can just because they have a Mac. They’re no more bug, accident or crash free than any other computer.October 24, 2012 at 1:49 pm #30697DeeJay SiBoogie
ParticipantMy old Mac got passed to the wife for her web browsing/shopping. Now for the price of a new replacement Mac I have 2 win7 laptops, one strictly for DJing configured at install purely for one job. The second laptop is my work horse for the web. Having used both there is honestly no difference, build quality only comes in to play if you buy a budget machine. IMHO Mac’s are way over priced but if money is no object and you like white with a glowing symbol go for it. if you want to keep a good amount of cash in your pocket for some other stuff like a new controller go for a decent win7 laptop. Certainly look for 4Gb or better still 8Gb RAM

KeymasterAs for the overpriced thing:
My MacBook Pro 15”, brand new i7 processor, 8gig ram, 1TB HD cost me 1800 bucks in a special deal with a carry bag form Timbuk2 (which is a 150 bucks value).
A Dell Precision (so we do not have the consumer grade quality crap) with the same configuration, costs me 1699 (as seen on dell.com today). And this comparison does not even include the software I get for free with the mac…October 28, 2012 at 7:36 am #30905JelM
