I suspect you get different answers. For playing live you don’t need thousands of tracks, rather 20-40 that are good. BTW I have 72 days of music in my collection but I don’t play all that as a DJ….

In terms of overall collection, I’m not sure but my vinyl collection (which I stopped buying a few years ago) is about 6000 records now. My digital collection is fairly big as well now. But in terms of playing out (club/bar/radio show) I have probably a few hours worth of music in one folder but will dip in to the main collection when required. I regularly shuffle my current folder but keep roughly the same number of tracks to keep it manageable.

My whole collection which spans 30yrs of DJing would take over 2 years to play no-stop. My House music which covers most genres is at around 67000, with my other selections like Reggae, RnB, Hip-Hop, Soul, Pop etc I’m touching around 130000. Then there’s my general collection which is below DJ quality music or the wife’s collection as I call it which is now stored in my old CD case, that’s another 1000 CDs
Depending what I’m booked for depends on what I take. If I’m playing House I’ll take around 40 tracks for every hour sorted in to playlist on USB stick, If I’m doing anything else like a wedding with general mainstream music or a Reggae/RnB party I’ll take my whole collection for that genre on a drive so I can cater for request.
As I’m now concentrating on my House music I get new music every week, probably around 40-50 new tracks. When I first started DJing I had 20 records or mixture of 12″ and LP’s which I would play to death during the night but as the crowd was always changing I got away with it.

Thanks for the responses! I usually have all my music sorted through Itunes which i access in Serato. I have genre playlists, popular request playlists (sorted as throwback, hip/hop, etc) and im hoping to get some music onto my USB just for convenience.
