If you are doing a 1.5 hour set…dont worry about the crowd….well to a certian extent. Stay away from music that has a fixed crowd as you are playing for the overall. Trap, Trance, and Bass music have Specific people that enjoy them and the overall crowd will not really get the music.

The Rule of thumb i have always used in situations like this is play music that will get the girls happy…then everything else will follow. If you are wanting to jump genres alot…do it in groups of 4-5 songs…this will give your night a better flow and will let the people who enjoy that genre hear some stuff they like before moving on to the next targeted group of music.

Good advice from Hee. I agree do not jump genres to often, it will disturb the audience more and to make the girls happy is always important, because their “fellas” have to nod too if they are happy 😉
I also find that putting in a more relaxed sound also helps and nothing to hardcore or “hefty” helps keep the mood in such a setting, while still having the people shake their booty from time to time.

    Bigchips,
I feel you. I sometimes play at a venue that has a wide age range. It is a similar situation to yours.
an hour and a half is very difficult to satisfy such a wide range of views. I do two things, first i open up and start play strictly for the ladies, secondly, the most of my music will be dedicated to the audience with the largest number. I might touch on other genres, but not specifically.

thx for all the replies, i put those theories to use yesterday and they def made the girls happy. tho i did have 2 different guys came up to me requesting, and i quote “something more upbeat, like some reggae…”

i was already playing EDM in the 128-132 bpm range lol. it was pretty clear these guys were in the wrong place. just trying to get attention and take over control. wasn’t having it. then on top of that, while i had girls coming up to the booth requesting songs and looking like they were having fun, the other dj (my partner, his event) sees this and decides he wants some of the attention as well, then proceeds to cut in every fifteen minutes to play music completely out of genre, pretty much killing the buzz i had built up.

got a lot of compliments afterwards on my sets tho 😀
