Well usually your bookshelf speakers are not FR (flat response) speakers, which is important to have a very flat baseline for your EQing. If you do not EQ on a flat reference your sound may be horrible when sent over a PA (which is typically quite FR).
So I would recommend getting good monitors. I do not know that specific Mackie model, but I am using the KRK Rockit and they have a good amount of bass and you can add a sub if needed.

O oh…lol I’m glad you chimed in and told me the importance of using monitors. The Mackies I’m referring to are the MR5mk2s. I’ll check out the KRK Rockit 5s since they’re in the same price range as the MR5mk2s. Thanks for responding.

Probably a stupid question, but did you try flipping the “bass boost” switch on the back of the left speaker to ON?

Actually, it’s a great question. However, the set of AV40’s I purchased didn’t have the Bass Boost switch. The power cord was attached to the left speaker. I believe the power cord for the AV40 you’re referring can be disconnected. Looks like a design change.

Just in case you don’t believe me..lol…here is a link from Amazon showing the latest version available on the market: http://tinyurl.com/9ygk9b3

Okay, I believe you now.

It’s too bad they dropped that from the design. I find it adds a nice kick to the low end for general listening purposes.
