It depends a bit on the opening and closing times for the overall night. Is your room the only one open that night or is there another party in one of the other rooms that’ll last until 4am?

In any case I would probably start with some more unknown tunes, but throw one or two recognisable tunes in the mix during the first hour. Then slowly increase the number of big tunes until you’re mixing more or less only bangers at the end of your set.

Use volume in your favour too – nothing like keeping 20% “in hand” and hitting them with a righteous volume boost at a time of your choosing!

Okay cool. There are 5 total rooms in the club. It is the superclub in Sheffield called Embrace. The club opens at 10pm, my room will open at 11pm for VIP. The club closes at 3am so my room shuts 1 hour before overall close. I will take this advice on board and plan accordingly. I have plenty of dubstep, drumstep, dnb and 110 stuff to throw in late night to really get my (hopefully) crowd jumping.

Good advise from Phil, I like to use autogain for the pre-gain adjustment and then “tune the energy” also by some quite minor volume changes… You will be amazed how even slight volume changes can have effect. Like when you come to the usual “now they go mental on the dancefloor” part of the song, just up the gain or volume knob a tiny bit and you’ll see what mental really means 😉

Good luck Tom! Pretty good going that you have the room to yourself.

Seeing as how you are competing with four other rooms, I would keep plenty of “accessible” tunes in your arsenal. By accessible I mean stuff people will know, or remixes of tracks that people know.

Are you going digital or switching back to CDs?

I’m Digital, never used a CDJ before and I don’t fancy placing that much risk on my 1st ever DJ gig haa. And i Shall have plenty of big tunes ready to unleash when the time is right. I think it’s easier than ever to have an amazing time at a club cause there are so many sick tunes out there that most people know 😀
