Well there are 2 versions of radio stations in Europe.
We have those format radios like the major US radios too, that only play their hotlists with very few variations and lots of commercials….
However there is a strong market also for alternative stations that focus on a much wider range. Especially the UK, Italy, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Slovenia have a great history of open minded music culture in radio and the program managers still know their history.

I’m from The Netherlands and radio has NO variety here. It’s the same stuff every day, no matter which station you are on. I have to bring my headphones to work, just to keep my sanity.

American TV + radio is almost intolerable for me.

Canadian radio is pretty awful as well, basically the same as American…

However here in Toronto there are some good late night stations, one station has a live broadcast from Comfort Zone (Canada’s ultimate after hours) once a week. There’s a few other ones but overall I pay no attention to anything on the radio or tv.

I have found myself recently listening to mostly scandinavian radio stations, and would definetley recommend checking them out 😛 even if you just go to tunein.com or something like that 🙂

Commercial radio stations in the UK are, on the whole, really poor.

That “20 songs picked by focus groups played every hour” thing you mentioned happens all the time here (UK) too. Even radio1 is culpable of this, during the day the music they play is intolerable.

I guess if you have access to a digital radio or you tune in to stations online you will find some excellent stations, i.e sonarfmuk, 6music etc, etc.

Do we already have a thread for good radio stations that people listen to?

If you’re lucky enough to have one of the music based versions of npr in your city, you’ll find it operates much closer to the way bbc radio does. Here in Detroit, we have WDET (http://wdetfm.org/), which is an amazing station.
