I’d say this…if there is some tune you really would love to share with him, then do it.

Put your collection up for him to pick from? No. Not unless you two are a business and thus creating a pool of music for you both to use. Even then he’s got to post his own stuff.

Just tell him you are bound to your ethics and you won’t just toss your stuff up for him or anyone to share.

    I agree with D-jam.

I think I would feel the same way you are, your music collection can be what defines you as a DJ, the thing that makes you stand out from the other DJ’s in the area.

If people ask me…… “Hey, what tune is this, or, who’s remix is it?” ….. Then I will happily tell them, no problem at all. God knows how many people i have told to download a certain tune becasue i think they would love it!

But to let someone search through my music collection that I have spent endless hours searching, buying, collecting…….. I’m sorry but that’s a big no no.

If it’s a good friend, I’d share my music (I’ve done it before), even though I paid for every tune . There may be some secret weapons that you want to keep for yourself, that’s no problem right?

I don’t feel like other dj’s are competition really, because I have my own style. Even if they have my tunes, they won’t mix them like I do and they won’t like the same tunes as I do.

Edit: It does depend on how someone asks me to share my stuff. As you say he’s been pressuring you, that would make me reluctant to give him my stuff as well.

I would never share tunes with someone pirating music.

I’m with Terry. This guy obviously doesn’t respect the people who are making the music.

I don’t understand how any DJ would seriously ask another DJ to open up his collection for him to pillage like that – it’s such a bizarre request. I’ve shared the odd track with DJ friends, or swapped mix CDs with them. But would never consider offering the whole enchilada, nor would I ever expect my friends to open up their crates to me.

hmm its a tough one, I burnt loads of good stuff to play on my mates CDs – he is a much better DJ than me don’t get me wrong but at the time I was playing Techno and he was purely Electro House so didnt think much of it. Over the last 6 months he has completely changed to full on techno DJ playing a lot of my stuff in the process, which at times could be annoying. But then I thought it is also a complement that I have had such a big influence on what this guy is now playing and a lot of the music I buy is from listening to mixes from other DJs I like so its not really any different.

I am definitely more cautious about giving music away now, but overall I think sharing music knowledge is good it helps to develop your style but maybe dont give away stuff for free if you have spent a lot of money without getting something in return!

And i was thinking i was the only one. I’ve got a few friends (no Djs) and they think they ”listen to electronic music” just because they now a few songs from Skrillex, David Guetta and Afrojack, also they doesn’t really appreciate real good music non-mainstream. I listen to mainstream music but also have my ‘underground’ side, they are always annoying me and asking me for my music sources and they want me to send them all my music and stuff like that.

That is really annoying for me. Like DJ Yaka says why should i give so easily my music collection that took me time and effort to someone who will not appreciate it they way it deserves to be.

I think, as a Dj and as person, if you really love it and appreciate it, your music collection is one os the most important things you have and it should be in some way ‘exclusive’.

I love to share music, but i think you have to do it just with people who really appreciates and knows about what you’re sharing with them.

PS: Sorry if my english is bad, is not my main language šŸ™‚
