Okay cool, so put a DJ with 2 CDJ’s & a mixer & a laptop with Serato timecode, next to a DJ with a Numark mixtrack pro and Traktor 2.5, there is really not much technical difference between the two? i’ve recieved criticism for my use of digital dj gear but i see alot of club DJ’s using laptops with their CDJ gear these days and i’m adamant to prove people wrong about digital dj’ing.

By all means go for it and prove them wrong. It is not the tools that matter it is the music that matters.

exactly the kind of attitude i want to put across. i aren’t an ego-ist like a few cdj dj’s i have met, but at the end of the day both pieces of kit do the same fundamental thing which is entertain a crowd. and if you can entertain a crowd on a piece of hardware and some software then so be it.

Iv noticed this also. Always seeing DJs using Pio 1000s with Serato but I barely ever see them using controllers. Iv not used Serato but I have been using Traktor 2 years now and my interpretation of it is Traktor is very deep software, you can use it on its own, with controllers and with timecode. Everything in Traktor is customisable and it is the perfect software for modern controllerism routines. Serato Scratch live on the other hand seems a lot more traditional, i dont think it offers you as much help with mixing and im not sure if you can sync or not but theese functions make no difference to me either way as I like to beatmatch manually anyway. I think Djs just like using the Pios and Serato because it looks more professional and at the end of the day if there is a full size setup in a club which still lets you use your software of choice why bother using a scaled down controller which a lot of the time theres no space in the booth for anyway. I wouldnt use timecode unless I was djing the entire night though because its to much hassle to setup between DJs. Ideally im sure wed all love Pio 2000s with DJM900 runin Serato in HID mode but why £5k when you can get a quality setup for £500+

You can’t compare the highest End CDJ and Mixer setups to the lowest end controller though…

Of course you have to compare in the correct price range…
HighEnd CDJs with highend controllers like 4Trak, NS6/7 etc.
Lowend chinese 100 bucks CDJs with 100 bucks controllers. (Controller still wins IMHO)

I use both, a controller setup and a Time Code setup.

    I have 2x CDJ 1000’s Mk3 and a DJM 700 at home which I use with Traktor Scratch 2.

However I also use a Traktor Kontrol S2 when DJ’ing at my residency.

I honestly believe that you can’t beat the feeling of DJ’ing on a pair of pioneer decks and mixer, there is just a feeling a controller can’t give you. I don’t know exactly what it is but it’s just there.

However, I honestly believe that a controller gives you way more freedom and creativity over a pair of CDJ’s.

Both have their pro’s and con’s

But one thing I know with 100% Certainty is, you can rock a club on either!

My own setup is using an S4 with Traktor, but when i play out I play on a varity of different gear. Sometimes i wont have room for my controller so i will use my Audio 8 with Timecode CDJ or tech 12s depending on what they have at the club.

Other times when i have to play with my Crew and we are opening for a headliner…we dont have the option to do equipment changes so i stick with their DVS setup. They all use Serato so i just use my USB stick and plug into their DVS setup.
Others I have no other option other than to just use my USB sticks and CDJ900/2000/850 etc.
My point…its all the same…only difference is knowing how to adjust your music for beat matching, but other than that you are doing exactly the same thing…just a different way of doing it.
With that said i prefer my S4 and Traktor with my Midi fighter…the possiblities are endless, and at this stage in my DJing almost effortless to mix 3-4 tracks at once…genre depending of course.

When i first made the switch to a controller, i got a lot of negative comments from people that i knew…but once they saw what i was capable of, it quickly changed their views on controllers.
