Keymasterwell said michael, maybe also combine some old school mixing techniques with new controllerism techniques.

ParticipantIt sounds like this one is an actual competition, rather than the winner being whoever brought out the most people.
I think the unique thing should be across the board, and I think you should try to slip in some mash-up ideology. Scratch or trick or tweak in a tune not meant for dance and make it work. One that makes the people scream and sing along. That will do wonders.

ParticipantYou have 10 minutes to show off what you have as a DJ?
What are the criteria that they will be judging you on? TBH how are you able to show off your skills within 10 minutes?
A “good” DJ is typically based on
:Crowd Control (reading the crowd, taking the crowd where you want with your music)
:Mixing abilites ( EQing, usage of effects, DJ tricks)
:Song Selection (obvious)
:How drunk you can get and still DJ properly (duhh joke)Now this DJ competition you are doing wont be able to really test any of these…cept maybe the last one…So im really curious as to how this is being judged. I mean a turntablism or Controllerist comp i can totally understand…but just a straight DJ comp.
Now on the total Flipside of things…DJ comps imo are a waste of time and the promoters way of making easy money without any actual promoting or effort involved. Unless its a controllerism or Turntablism as i stated above.
I have seen Girl DJs win DJ comps who do extremely basic mixing, but wear a lil sexy outfit and shake around and win…yet they are not good DJs…they can mix…passably…but dont really do anything that well…yet they won. I have also seen some amazing DJs who are mixing 4 tracks at once throwing in 1 shot samples and litterly remixing live…on point on beat in phrase and in key…yet they didnt even place in the top 3. DJing is an Artform…just because you like what they are doing the next person may not…its all personal preference…so how can u judge personal preference?
You dont see people doing live 10 minute Canvas painting competitions….

To me, the best way to know if it’s for real or a waste is to see if they have official judges. If it’s solely on crowd response, move on.
Even then, you’ll sometimes get judges who pre-picked a winner because it’s their buddy. 🙁

MemberGreat, thanks for all the replies
Yea i read it says only Megamix (is this like the one that you mix 10 songs within a minute, haha joke), stage presentation, that’s all, and when you says “Pre Picked A Winner”, I thought that only happen in my place (there was this Heineken Thirst competition here and that was happened)
And about that 10 minutes yea i know, it’s just about quick mix that can make everyone amazed

ParticipantI’d go the mashup route, or in a similar vein, creatively throw so many songs in their faces you have the whole crowd guessing what is coming up next. Link a bunch of vocal hooks together “are you ready” something like that. Then in the next round do it from a whole ‘nother angle. Hey where is this competition? maybe I should try it. :p
