ParticipantYou will have to have a play with Traktor (there’s a free demo on their website) and see what you think. To me its a no brainer but it all comes down to personal preference…despite what the mixvibes website says, its not the “most advanced DJing software there is”.

ParticipantHaving used Torq, VDJ and Traktor, and Serato…i can say hands down Traktor is the BEST digital DJing software out there for Midi based solutions. Serato and Traktor are the industry standard for any type of Digital Djing…
Traktor is not as easy as just setup and play as there is a lot of stuff to go over in the user interface…but thats because its mean to be used in a professional setting allowing you to modify as you need.
Anything other than Traktor or Serato is not professional software/equipment imo.

KeymasterThis is a lot about personal preference. I would hugely recommend to download the Traktor demo first and try it. You can easily enough map it or get a TSI mapping for your controller. Even with mouse and keyboard you can get a good impression on what Traktor will have to offer you. I would do the same for the VDJ demo.
I am not yet familiar with Cross but it seems like an up and coming software and the French have a great history in electronic music making. So if that floats your boat better after having tested the other 2 softwares, then by all means go for it. If then you are decided on the software part, go look for the controller that suits you best and integrates good with your choice of software.
This is how I would approach this things.July 24, 2012 at 6:16 pm #1008530Hee Won Jung
ParticipantSorry Terry_42 I have to disagree on that its based on what works best for you. Software is very much like Hardware…There are Gemini, Pioneer, Denon, Stanton etc. brand of CDJs/Turntables and Mixers…now yes ALL of them are usable…and yes all of them do pretty much the exact same thing…but that doesnt mean that they are all made equally…There is a reason why Pioneer and Tech 12s are industry standard…and its the same with software, There are a variety of usable software out there that all function the exact same…but there is a reason why Serato and Traktor are the goto Software for Digital DJing.
You wouldn’t do professional photography off an Iphone so why would you do professional DJing with the same quality in Software?

KeymasterFor the sake of argument: I am sorry but your argument is flawed.
Fact 1: You said Traktor is the best. Which is an infactual subjective statement.
Fact 2: You said compare an iPhone with a top of the line DSLR as comparison and the comparison is wrong. (I do photography)So point 1 is disabled by the fact that actually Serato is feature wise inferior (raw sheet features) than VDJ or Traktor. Traktor is feature wise inferior (again raw feature sheet comparison) to VDJ.
Still I am not saying VDJ is superior to both, as they all get the job done in an extremely high quality and Serato definitely has its things going for it (why many Pros choose it), same goes for Traktor and especially in the US Traktor has a huge following, so does VDJ in Europe and even CrossVibes has its market is not per se worse than any other. Now to go with your analogy of photography (you got me there, since this is one of my favorite hobbies): As for DSLRs this is more like comparing the top of the line Nikons to Canons. Feature wise they both have their things going for them. Both cater to a different workflow with their setup and control wheels. However both are used by extremely good artists to excellent result. You cannot dismiss any photographer whether he uses a Canon or a Nikon for his art. Same goes for the debate over DJ software.
But now comes the really hard to swallow pill: Yes I have seen pictures taken from famous “Ken Rockwell” (you can google him) taken with a point and shoot 100 bucks Nikon and they are by far better than what some people do with their Nikon D3s. But of course if Ken packs out his 30 year old Tachihara large format (that is based on a 100 year old design) he outmatches any current DSRL, because there is no chip yet than could reproduce 3000 Megapixels worth of film real-estate.
In DJing we are lucky enough that sound quality output from most sound cards is good enough for the audience not to hear the difference if we use high quality digital…. in photography produced on an 8 yards Hollywood Filmstudio you will see the difference in Ken’s shots. But even though I am a decent photographer I could not use that old Tachihara to the extend he does, I cannot compete. So what it boils down to is very simple and this is why I do not let any software or any tool (even the Hercules Console Phil just reviewed) be dismissed on the forum and I hence also apologize for sometimes riding on the S4 a bit hard (but it bugged me).
The bottom line: The most important thing is the artist. No tool you use can replace the artist, his choices, his workflows his passion and love for creating. If you do not have it, you will fail with any software and any camera you use. If you have it you are blessed and you simply need a tool that caters your way of creating.
And for comparison sake: Yes I have seen DJs with a full set of CDJ 2ks and a DJM 2k etc. that I would hope to never hear again and I have been to parties where a 14 year old played music from 2 hooked up iPods through a stone age PA and had a total blast and I would like to see him again any day of the week.So please do not dismiss anything or any tool for what it is: A tool.
There is no best tool for an artist. There are just tools and artists who make something out of them. This is what I try to cater to and what is the philosophy by this site providing things like the Controller guide, which is a fair comparison not ruling out any choices, simply comparing facts. And for industry standards: I have yet to see any industry standard that is the best of its kind. If it were I would just have watched the movie I saw with my girlfriend on HD-DVD and not BluRay, I would have Beta Cassettes not VHS in my basement, I would have metric nuts in my Harley Davidson, …. Industry standards are about marketing not making the best thing in anything.

ParticipantFacts on Paper do not compare to actual use though. I have used VDJ for 2 years, Serato for about 2 years and Torq for about a year and now I use Traktor, Serato, and CDJs. Having spent a great deal amount of time on 4 different platforms i can say that in my opinion nothing can beat Traktor as a midi solution. VDJ while a good piece of Consumer software just doesnt live up to something like Traktor or Serato. It is just that…a Consumer piece of software. The majority of Digital DJs are using a DVS or Midi setup use Serato and Traktor…now there has to be a reason for that…not just marketing…and once you dig into both pieces of software it is pretty obvious as to why they are the most used software in the Digital Age.
You compare Nikon to Canon…thats like Serato to Traktor…would you use a Sony or a Pentax? I dont see any professional photographers running around with a point and click camera.
I may piss some people off here but saying that all software is equal and its all based on what you like…is like getting a ribbon for participation for doing track and field when you placed last.
Yes the creativity and skill is the most important thing required…but why hinder their ability with showing people something that is not as good as something else?
Its the same thing like seeing the Ipad DJ and Vjay app…yes they do work, and you can mix songs, but no one making money off DJing will be using either of these anytime soon. ALL this stuff is catered to the consumer market, just like 95% of the new Midi controllers that have come out in the last year.
Regarding the industry standards you compared…you are again comparing what is Consumer standard vs. Industry (Professional) standard…
Consumers will use Bluray, VHS, etc…as it is often the cheaper solution and easier to mass produce.
Professional standards are quite different in any field, and are often a lot more expensive and better overall and is meant to be used in a professional setting..IE DJing…Using 320kbps for Digital while a lot of consumers will listen to 128kbps.I mean really you wouldnt be using a cheap ass black and decker screw gun if you were a carpenter…you would use makita, dewalt, or Hilti…and those are 3 to 4x the price.
Same thing with a Camera…you wouldnt use a point and click sony camera, you would be using a Nikon. Now a real pro can do miracles on pretty much anything because they are a professional…they have put the hard time learning their craft over years and years and now have the best equipment and can do anything on anything…the majority of people on here are not those people.

KeymasterAs this is escalating into a Traktor fanboy thread and not helping the original poster anymore I am closing down here.
You voiced your single opinion Hee and I accept that you put more into tools than doing things, but please do not dismiss anything anymore or I will delete such posts. This is not what digitaldjtips is standing for. If you are looking for the Traktor fanboy forum please refer to djtechtools.comJuly 25, 2012 at 10:30 am #24540Phil Morse
KeymasterWell, we will be reviewing Cross 2.0 very soon so that ought to help you. You really have to ask how much you’re going to use the extra features on offer. Learning new software is always a challenge, but if you want remix decks and only remix decks will do (for instance), then Traktor plus NI hardware is (currently) the only way to go. There are no rights and wrongs – it’s what comes out of the speakers that counts, and there is no definitive way to mix music.

ParticipantWell said Phil! I guess at the end of the day, people get caught up in all these wild new features when realistically they may very infrequently or never use them. I’m guilty of this as I always crave the latest and greatest even if I realistically don’t need it…more for self gratification than anything.
