KeymasterWell I have been DJing for well over 20 years and I have DJed for a very long time on CDJs and a mixer and I have come to the (sometimes unpopular) belief that it is all about personal preference and sometimes withstanding the change in technologies.
I can full heartily say that I see no real advantage in CDJs apart of not having to use a laptop. But since using a laptop is no downside for me, I can see no advantage for me and I have gone fully digital.
However I do not flame people for using CDJs or even turntables. It is their style and in the end it is about music and not the tool you use. However I would say that the DDJ Ergo is overpriced for what you get in the unit. The Numark N4 will deliver the same if you want a plastic unit and it is cheaper and has 4 decks. If you want a 2 deck layout, the Terminal Mix 2 or for 4 decks the Terminal Mix 4 will deliver better build quality, an all metal chassis and lot of better jogs for the same price or a hundret less.
If you do not really need the flashy lightshow, the DDJ Ergo is not the unit I would consider.July 16, 2012 at 6:54 pm #1007882Todd Oddity
ParticipantOne word: Legacy.
Basically, in the early 2000’s Pioneer managed to make their gear the industry standard, and because of that, it’s what people expect to see in many booths and therefore they are familiar with working with them. Despite what many will try to tell you, there are no technical advantages over equivalent high end controllers or other brands of CD decks (the term CDJ is now used to describe most brands, but it really is a Pioneer model code). It really just comes down to people using what they are comfortable with because it’s what they have always used.
But things are changing. I watched CD’s get integrated into most booths in the 90’s, and then I watched Pioneer take over all those booths. I see it happening again, this time with digital. It’ll take a few years, but CDJ’s will disappear. They have already mostly made the exit in my city.

ParticipantCDJs aren’t going anywhere soon. On a global scale they are the standard and will be for many more years. Whilst I did make the change to digital from CDJs about a year back, there are very few controllers that have comparable jogwheels and reliability. Things are improving for sure but still got a way to go. The current CDJs are more than just CD players, they are media players. Think how long vinyl turntables have been around. People said they would disappear when CDJs starting getting big and they are still holding on (just). Unless I’m bringing my own equipment, I’d be most happy to jump in a booth with a pair of CDJ 2000/1000’s. A lot of the digital crowd don’t give CDJs enough credit cause the never used them (or used them enough). Its important to use what works best for you but don’t write CDJs off just yet…there’s a reason that Denon is aggressively taking on that market…

Ah, but that’s my point – I’m not saying they will disappear, but the days of them being the de facto standard are ending. Bar and club owners won’t continue to blow big money on gear that less and less people are using. If Pioneer were to release a controller that was basically a CDJ2000 without the CD mechanism, it would probably be quickly adopted and they would hold on to their position. The issue is, they are acting like Denon did in the early 2000’s. Denon dual decks were the industry standard, and then Pioneer started releasing table top models. Denon resisted the trend and tried to pack all the same features into dual decks, making the layouts *extremely* cramped. The Pioneers had more space and better jogs – and voilĂ , they ate Denon alive. If Pioneer continues to only put token effort into digital gear, someone will scoop them, and that is a hard ship to turn once it has started.
Of course, on the flip-side of that, there is also the difference this time that digital gear is so much more portable, it would be very easy for bar and club owners to just shift the expectation of who is responsible for providing gear onto the dj’s. “You want to play here? Bring your own controller and here is where you plug in.” This is what I’m seeing happen in my city. Forget owners not wanting to pay for the little used CD part of a CDJ – they’d rather just not pay for anything at all.

KeymasterIndeed Oddity I see the same trend going on here. The clubs rather buy some of those cheapish CDJs like the Denon compact line etc. only for backup and actually expect you to come with a controller and laptop…

ParticipantJust out of curiosity where about’s are you guys located? I’m not seeing the same trend anywhere on my travels but am seeing a lot more DJ’s bringing their own equipment by choice.
The cost is certainly an issue now that much cheaper alternatives are available. I wonder what things will be like in 10 years time? That’s not an invitation to mention nonsense like robots replacing people…

That would be ridiculous — we all know genetically modified chickens will be replacing all dj’s next decade.
Oh, and I’m based out of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

ParticipantCool dude. I’ve been in Whistler for a while now, making trips down to Vancouver every now and then but the EDM scene here seems to be really behind the rest of the world. I hear Ottawa is a good time.
